Chapter 3 - The Reynolds Dynasty

I stared at the glowing monitor, unable to pull my gaze away from Victoria’s ice-cold, dark eyes staring back at me through the frozen frame. The crescent scar above her eyebrow was an unmistakable mark—a permanent souvenir from a horseback riding accident she had suffered when we were both in our early twenties. I had been there the day she fell. I had held the ice pack to her face while we waited for the ambulance. I had considered her a sister.

"Victoria..." the name escaped my lips in a breathless, horrified whisper. "It’s Victoria."

Detective Vance immediately leaned forward, pulling a notepad toward himself. "Victoria Reynolds? Michael Reynolds' sister?"

"Yes," I rasped, my hands shaking so violently I had to press them against my knees. "Yes! That’s her! Look at her eyebrow—that scar! She got it in 2017! She... oh God, why? Why would Victoria do this to Ethan? She was his aunt!"

Detective Lin sat down in the chair beside me, her expression dead serious. "Mrs. Reynolds, we need you to tell us everything you know about Victoria. Her background, her relationship with your ex-husband, her access to this hospital—everything."

I closed my eyes, forcing my panicked, shattered mind to construct a timeline of a family I had spent six years trying to forget.

The Reynolds family was non-official royalty in the Pacific Northwest. They built their immense fortune in commercial real estate, pharmaceutical logistics, and medical equipment manufacturing. Michael was the golden boy—the eldest son, the groomed heir to the Reynolds Global empire. Victoria was the younger daughter, two years younger than Michael, but possessing a fierce, ruthless intelligence that eclipsed almost everyone around her.

Unlike Michael, who focused on the corporate finance side of the family business, Victoria was a brilliant, high-ranking research chemist. She held a doctorate in molecular pharmacology from Stanford and served as the Senior Vice President of Innovation at Reynolds BioTech—a medical subsidiary that supplied advanced drug-delivery systems and specialized IV compounds to major hospitals across Washington State, including St. Jude.

"She had access," I realized aloud, my eyes snapping open as the pieces began to fit together in a horrifying puzzle. "Reynolds BioTech supplied the NICU’s specialized drug inventory. Victoria had high-level clearance to every medical facility in the city. She didn't need a visitor badge. She could walk into St. Jude in full surgical scrubs, and nobody would ever question her presence!"

"That explains how she bypassed hospital security," Vance noted, writing rapidly in his pad. "What about her personal relationship with you and Michael? Was there any conflict? Any financial motives?"

I let out a bitter, dry laugh that sounded entirely hollow. "Victoria hated me from the day Michael brought me home."

I remembered the lavish, intimidating dinners at the Reynolds estate in Bellevue. I was a girl from a working-class background, the daughter of a public school teacher and a mechanic. To Victoria and her mother, I was an unwanted outsider—a lower-class gold-digger who had trapped their prized heir into a marriage. Victoria had never made an effort to conceal her disdain. She treated me with a polished, passive-aggressive cruelty disguised as aristocratic concern.

"When I got pregnant with Ethan," I continued, memories rushing back with terrifying clarity, "Victoria was furious. Michael’s father had passed away two years prior, and his vast estate was governed by a strict family trust."

"What kind of trust?" Detective Lin asked, leaning in.

"The Reynolds Family Master Trust," I explained, the details returning from long-buried legal documents. "It was structured by Michael’s grandfather. The trust stipulated that fifty percent of the family's liquid assets—worth over eighty million dollars—would automatically transfer to the first legitimate male heir of the next generation upon the child’s birth."

Detective Vance stopped writing. His eyes slowly raised to meet mine. "A male heir."

"Yes," I breathed, my chest tightening. "Before Ethan was born, Victoria was the primary executor of the trust because Michael was unmarried. But the moment Ethan was born, the control of that eighty-million-dollar fund was legally shifted away from Victoria and placed into a child trust controlled jointly by Michael and me as his parents. If Ethan lived, Victoria lost control of the money. If Ethan died..."

"The money remained under Victoria's control as the primary trust administrator," Lin finished the sentence, her voice dark. "An eighty-million-dollar motive."

"It wasn't just the money," I added, a sudden memory piercing through the fog. "Two weeks before Ethan was born, Victoria came to our house alone. Michael wasn't home. She stood in the nursery, looking at the crib, and told me that a child born from my 'weak, common lineage' had no right to inherit the Reynolds empire. I thought she was just being arrogant and cruel. I never... I never imagined she would actually kill him!"

I covered my face with my hands, dry sobs racking my body. The sheer, incomprehensible evil of it was paralyzing. Ethan hadn't died from a tragic twist of fate. He had been murdered like a nuisance line-item on a corporate ledger, executed by his own aunt for eighty million dollars.

"Mrs. Reynolds," Vance said, his voice hard as iron. "We have the security footage, we have the positive identification, we have the toxicological proof from the archived blood, and now we have a massive, airtight financial motive. Victoria Reynolds is going to pay for what she did to your son."

"What about Michael?" I asked, looking up through my tears. The question burned in my throat like acid. "Did Michael know? Was he part of this?"

Vance stood up from his desk, pulling his coat tighter around his shoulders. "That is precisely what we are going to find out. Detective Lin and I are executing an arrest warrant for Victoria Reynolds and a material witness warrant for Michael Reynolds within the hour. I want you to stay here in the secure administrative wing under police protection until we bring them in."

"No," I said instantly, standing up from my chair. "I'm coming with you."

"Mrs. Reynolds, that's impossible," Lin said firmly. "This is an active felony arrest involving high-profile suspects. It's dangerous and highly irregular."

"He called me a murderer!" I shouted, the six years of accumulated pain, guilt, and self-hatred suddenly exploding into a volcano of absolute rage. "For six years, Michael made me believe I killed my own child! He destroyed my life! He let his sister poison our baby and then blamed my genes! I don't care if it's irregular, Detective! I am going to stand on that pavement and watch you put the handcuffs on her!"

May you like

Vance looked at me for a long, heavy moment. He saw the fire in my eyes—the fierce, unyielding resolve of a mother who had been dragged through hell and had finally found her way back to fight.

"She stays in the unmarked police sedan with Lin," Vance ordered his partner quietly. "No exceptions. Let's go pick up a murderer."
