Chapter 4 - The Bellevue Arrest

The Reynolds family estate in Bellevue, Washington, was a monstrous, gated compound of glass, steel, and dark timber, sitting majestically on a cliffside overlooking the grey, icy expanse of Lake Washington. It was a physical testament to unchecked wealth and generational power—a fortress built to keep the rest of the world at bay.
As our three unmarked police vehicles pulled up to the massive iron security gates, the evening sky had turned a dark, bruised shade of purple. Rain was pouring down in heavy, relentless sheets, bouncing off the hood of the sedan where I sat in the backseat with Detective Lin.
My heart was pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs. My hands were clenched into tight fists in my lap, my fingernails digging so deeply into my palms that they nearly broke the skin.
Detective Vance stepped out of the lead vehicle, holding a rolled-up warrant in a clear plastic sleeve. He approached the gate intercom and pressed the button.
"Reynolds residence," a muffled, arrogant butler’s voice answered over the speaker.
"This is Detective Thomas Vance, Seattle Police Department," Vance announced, his voice echoing clearly over the storm. "I am in possession of a signed Superior Court warrant for the immediate arrest of Victoria Reynolds for first-degree aggravated murder. Open this gate immediately, or my team will breach the perimeter."
A long, shocked silence followed over the intercom.
Ten seconds later, the massive iron gates creaked open, swinging slowly inward.
The three police sedans swept up the long, winding brick driveway, pulling to a halt in front of the grand, lit entrance. Vance and four uniformed officers jumped out of the vehicles, their sidearms drawn but held at low-ready positions.
"Stay in the car, Sarah," Lin reminded me sternly, unlocking her door and stepping out into the rain to provide cover.
Through the rain-streaked window of the sedan, I watched the front doors of the mansion swing open.
Victoria Reynolds stepped out onto the sheltered stone porch.
She was thirty-eight now, but she looked as immaculately preserved as ever. She wore a tailored ivory silk blouse, black wool trousers, and her dark hair was styled in a flawless, elegant twist. She held a glass of white wine in her left hand. Her expression was not one of fear or surprise; it was one of supreme, aristocratic annoyance.
Behind her, emerging from the warm interior of the home, was Michael.
My breath caught in my throat as I saw my ex-husband for the first time in six years. He had aged. His hair was silvering at the temples, and he wore an expensive cashmere sweater. Beside him stood his new wife—a young, blonde woman holding a newborn baby wrapped in a pink blanket.
The sight of Michael holding a new, healthy child while his sister stood beside him sent a wave of absolute, sickening fury through my veins.
"What is the meaning of this outrage?!" Victoria demanded, her voice cutting sharply through the sound of the rain. "Do you have any idea who we are? Who authorized this absurd circus?!"
Detective Vance marched up the stone steps, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his utility belt.
"Victoria Reynolds," Vance declared loudly, "you are under arrest for the murder of Ethan Reynolds on October fourteenth, 2020."
Michael stepped forward, his face twisting into a scowl of utter disbelief. "Are you out of your mind, Officer?! Ethan died six years ago from a genetic disorder! My sister is a respected corporate executive! Get off my property before I call the Chief of Police!"
"Your sister poisoned your son with a concentrated dose of potassium chloride, Mr. Reynolds," Vance barked back, not wavering for a single second. "We have the forensic toxicology, we have the modified trust files, and we have high-definition, AI-restored video of Victoria injecting the poison directly into your baby's IV line!"
The wine glass slipped from Victoria’s fingers, crashing onto the stone porch and shattering into a hundred glittering shards. The aristocratic composure on her face cracked instantly, replaced by a flash of raw, naked terror.
Michael froze. He turned his head slowly, looking at his sister. "Victoria... what is he talking about?"
"It’s a lie!" Victoria shrieked, her voice dropping its refined accent, becoming sharp and desperate. "It’s a frame job! They're lying, Michael! I was never in that NICU!"
"We have you on camera, Victoria," Detective Lin called out from the driveway. "We have the scar above your eyebrow clear as day."
Uniformed officers grabbed Victoria’s arms, twisting them behind her back. She began to struggle frantically, screaming profanities, her tailored silk blouse tearing against the cold steel of the handcuffs.
"Michael! Help me! Call the lawyers! CALL THE LAWYERS!" she screamed as she was dragged down the stone steps into the pouring rain.
Michael stood on the porch, completely paralyzed, his mouth hanging open in total shock. As the officers shoved Victoria into the back of a police cruiser, his eyes wandered across the driveway, landing directly on the rear window of the sedan where I was sitting.
Our eyes met through the rain-slicked glass.
I didn't hide. I didn't look away. I slowly rolled down the window, letting the cold, freezing rain splash against my face.
Michael gasped, taking an involuntary step back on the porch. "Sarah...?"
I stared at him with eyes that held no fear, no guilt, and no love. Only absolute, unyielding retribution.

"She didn't kill him with my genes, Michael," I said, my voice carrying clearly across the quiet driveway, cold as the winter storm. "She killed him for your money. And you let her."
Michael’s face turned deathly pale. He dropped to his knees on the wet stone porch, staring at me as the police cruisers flashed their red and blue lights, illuminating his absolute, complete destruction.
