Part 2: The Will Rebecca Never Wanted Delayed

Nobody moved.

The deputy marshals stepped into the living room while Richard Lawson carefully adjusted his glasses.

Daniel forced a laugh.

"This is ridiculous."

No one joined him.

Richard set a leather briefcase on the coffee table.

"Mr. Daniel Mercer?"

"What is this?"

Richard ignored the question.

Instead, he looked at Claire.

His voice softened immediately.

"Hello, Claire."

For the first time all day, a tiny smile appeared on her face.

"Hi, Mr. Lawson."

Daniel's confidence cracked.

"You know him?"

Claire nodded.

"He worked with Mom."

Richard opened the briefcase.

Inside were dozens of documents.

Official seals.

Court orders.

Financial statements.

And one thick binder.

"Two years ago," Richard said, "Rebecca Collins established a trust."

Daniel folded his arms.

"So?"

Richard looked directly at him.

"A trust worth approximately twenty-seven million dollars."

The room gasped.

Daniel nearly dropped his drink.

"Twenty-seven what?"

Richard continued calmly.

"The trust was frozen until Claire's sixth birthday due to an ongoing legal review requested by Rebecca herself."

My stomach tightened.

Rebecca had anticipated something.

Something serious.

Richard opened another folder.

"She included a private letter explaining why."

Daniel's face suddenly lost color.

Because deep down, he already knew.

Richard began reading.

"If this letter is being opened, then Claire has turned six years old. I pray she is safe. I pray my sister Anna is caring for her. And I pray Daniel Mercer is nowhere near her inheritance."

The room froze.

Daniel's breathing stopped.

My heart pounded.

Rebecca had named him specifically.

Richard continued.

"Six months before my death, Daniel approached me asking for money. When I refused, he threatened to find another way. I recorded the conversation and gave copies to my attorney."

Daniel stumbled backward.

"No."

Richard slid a flash drive onto the table.

"Oh yes."

The deputy marshals exchanged looks.

The church ladies stared openly.

And Claire quietly picked up a lock of her cut hair from the floor.

Still saying nothing.

Still watching.

Richard opened one final folder.

"Rebecca also left instructions that if Daniel Mercer ever attempted financial coercion, intimidation, or abuse toward Claire..."

He paused.

Then finished.

"...all evidence would be delivered directly to federal investigators."

The room became deathly silent.

Daniel suddenly understood.

The envelope he never opened wasn't money.

May you like

It was a trap.

And he had walked directly into it.
