Part 3: Everything Daniel Stole

The video took less than ten minutes to destroy him.

Richard connected a laptop to the television.

Rebecca appeared on the screen.

Alive.

Confident.

Looking directly into the camera.

"Daniel," she said.

"If you're seeing this, then you ignored every warning I left behind."

Daniel sank into a chair.

His face had gone gray.

Rebecca continued.

"I hired investigators after you attempted to access my accounts."

Gasps echoed around the room.

"You forged signatures."

"You created shell invoices."

"You tried to borrow against properties you didn't own."

The deputy marshals began taking notes.

Daniel's hands shook.

"It wasn't like that."

No one listened.

The video continued.

"Most importantly, you thought nobody knew where the missing insurance money went."

Richard opened another folder.

Bank statements spilled across the table.

Thousands.

Then hundreds of thousands.

Then millions.

Every transfer traced.

Every account documented.

Every theft mapped perfectly.

The total exceeded three million dollars.

The violin teacher covered her mouth.

One church lady whispered a prayer.

Daniel looked at me desperately.

"Anna, tell them."

I stared at him.

For two years I had made excuses.

For two years I had convinced myself his temper wasn't abuse.

His lies weren't betrayal.

His cruelty wasn't intentional.

Now I saw everything clearly.

"No."

One word.

That's all it took.

The deputy marshals stepped forward.

Richard opened the final document.

"There is one more matter."

Daniel closed his eyes.

As if he already knew.

"The trust includes a guardianship review clause."

I froze.

Richard looked directly at me.

"Rebecca requested that Anna Collins become permanent legal guardian."

My throat tightened.

Claire looked up slowly.

For the first time all day, fear appeared in her eyes.

Fear that she might lose another home.

I walked across the room.

Knelt beside her.

And took her hand.

"You are staying with me."

Claire's lip trembled.

Just once.

Then she squeezed my hand back.

Behind us, one deputy marshal placed handcuffs on Daniel.

May you like

And for the first time since Rebecca died...

Claire smiled.
