Chapter 3 - The Secret Attorney

We arrived at a modest brick townhouse in the historic district forty minutes later. The rain fell in heavy sheets, washing the blood from the cut on my cheek.

I slammed the brass knocker against the heavy oak door. Moments later, the porch light flickered on.

An elderly man with silver hair and sharp, intelligent eyes opened the door, wearing a tartan robe over his pajamas. He looked at my wet, disheveled appearance, then at Sarah, and his expression instantly darkened.

“Emma,” Arthur Pendelton said quietly. “He’s out of surgery?”

“Arthur,” I choked out, tears finally breaking through my wall of composure. “She tried to kill me. She forged his power-of-attorney.”

Arthur’s eyes hardened. He stepped aside immediately. “Get inside. Both of you.”

Arthur Pendelton had been my father’s personal legal counsel for thirty years. He was the man who handled our family’s private affairs long before Victoria entered the picture six years ago as a wealthy pharmaceutical heiress.

Inside his warm, book-lined study, Arthur poured two glasses of amber brandy and set a box of medical gauze on the coffee table. He tended to the cut on my face while Sarah sat huddled under a wool blanket, sipping tea.

I laid the two folders onto his mahogany desk.

“Look at these,” I said.

Arthur put on his reading glasses and began sifting through the documents. As he read the surgery logs, the financial transfers, and the list of deceased property owners, his face turned from pale to ghostly white.

“My God,” Arthur whispered. “The Marcus estate... the Vance family holdings... all those patients died of sudden cardiac arrest in St. Jude’s ICU over the last four years.”

“And Victoria acquired their assets through shell companies,” I added, pointing to the transaction stamps. “She’s using the hospital as a slaughterhouse for wealthy, isolated patients. And now she’s doing it to my father.”

Arthur closed the file, his hands trembling slightly. “Emma, your father knew something was wrong. Three days ago, he came to my office alone. He was terrified. He said he suspected Victoria was poisoning his daily vitamins.”

My heart stopped. “He knew? Then why did he agree to the surgery?!”

“Because he didn't have a choice,” Arthur explained quietly. “His heart condition was real, Emma. The blockage was critical. But he knew that if he went under the knife, Victoria would move to seize everything he owned.”

Arthur opened his desk drawer and pulled out a thick, wax-sealed Manila envelope.

“This is your father’s true last will and testament,” Arthur said, laying it on the table between us. “Executed forty-eight hours ago. Witnessed by Sarah and notarized by my firm.”

I looked at Sarah, who nodded faintly.

“In this document,” Arthur continued, “your father revokes all prior powers-of-attorney granted to Victoria Carter. He places eighty percent of the hospital’s shares into a private trust controlled solely by you upon his death or medical incapacitation.”

“And the remaining twenty percent?” I asked.

“Divided among the hospital’s medical staff and charitable foundations,” Arthur smiled faintly. “Your father wanted to ensure the hospital could never be turned into a private corporate empire.”

I looked at the seal. “Why didn't you reveal this to the hospital board today?”

“Because Victoria’s forged power-of-attorney was registered with the hospital’s corporate secretary this morning,” Arthur said bitterly. “Until your father wakes up and personally confirms his sanity, or until we prove the forgery in court, Victoria holds operational control of the facility. And if she declares your father brain-dead or medically incompetent tomorrow...”

“She inherits everything anyway under her marriage contract,” I finished the sentence, feeling a cold knot form in my gut.

“Precisely,” Arthur said. “She doesn't need him dead, Emma. She just needs him silenced for forty-eight hours.”

I looked at my phone. A second message popped up from the unknown number that had sent me to Room 714:

Victoria has moved your father to ICU Suite 9. He is scheduled for an experimental sedative drip at 6:00 AM. You have four hours.
