Chapter 8 - The Awakening

Inside the quiet room, the noise of the sirens was muffled.
My father lay on the elevated bed, his skin pale, multiple monitors beeping rhythmically around him. Beside his bed, Dr. Harrison’s backup syringe was already hooked into the side valve of his IV drip line.
Dr. Harrison turned around in shock, his hands dripping with clear liquid. “What are you doing in here?! Get out!”
“Step away from him!” I screamed, grabbing a heavy brass IV pole and holding it like a spear.
“You’re crazy!” Harrison shouted, reaching for the IV tube to plunge the fluid into my father’s vein manually. “He’s my patient!”
I swung the brass pole with all the strength in my body. It struck Harrison across the chest, knocking him backward over a rolling medical cart. Syringes, gauze, and glass vials crashed onto the floor.
Harrison scrambled to his feet, his face twisted in rage, lunging toward me. But before he could reach me, Julian burst into the room, shoving Harrison face-first against the glass window and pinning his arms behind his back.
“It’s over, Harrison!” Julian yelled over the sound of the sirens. “The feds have your bank accounts!”
I rushed to my father’s bedside, immediately pulling the dangerous IV line from his arm.
“Dad!” I sobbed, grabbing his cold, frail hand. “Dad, can you hear me? Please!”
The heart monitor’s rhythm spiked. His eyelids fluttered wildly under the harsh fluorescent lights.
Slowly, painfully, my father opened his eyes. The cloud of heavy sedatives was beginning to clear. He looked up at the ceiling, then slowly turned his head toward me.
“Emma...?” his voice was a barely audible whisper, raspy and dry.
“I’m here, Dad,” I cried, pressing his hand against my wet cheek. “I’m here. I never left you.”
His fingers twitched, weakly wrapping around mine. “Victoria... she said... you took the money...”
“She lied to you, Dad,” I sobbed, showing him the gold signet ring on my finger that my mother had given me. “She tried to steal everything. She tried to kill us both.”
Tears welled in my father’s tired eyes. Clarity returned to his gaze—the sharp, brilliant intelligence of the surgeon he had always been.
“I knew...” my father whispered, a faint, resolute smile touching his pale lips. “I signed... the new will... with Arthur...”

“I have it, Dad,” I said. “The hospital is safe.”
Outside the glass doors, heavy boots echoed down the flooded corridor. Federal agents in black tactical vests, accompanied by Arthur Pendelton and city police officers, swarmed the hallway, placing Harrison and Victoria’s remaining security guards in heavy steel handcuffs.
