Chapter 5 - Sterling's Move

The armed lieutenants in the room immediately reached for their waistcoats, but before a single weapon could be cleared from its holster, the side doors of the library burst open.

Six heavily armed men clad in tactical gear—Everett’s true loyalists, led by his personal chief of security who had been quietly alerted hours earlier—flooded the space. Within five seconds, Sterling’s men were disarmed, forced to their knees, and pinned against the floor.

Sterling backed against the fireplace, his face pale as fresh snow, his hands trembling violently. "Everett... brother... listen to me! This is a misunderstanding! Whitfield told me you were brain-dead! He manipulated me!"

"Save it, Sterling," Everett growled, taking slow, deliberate steps toward his younger brother. Every footfall sounded like a ticking clock in the silent room. "I heard every word you said in my room over the last eight months. I heard you divide my empire. I heard you plan my murder. And I heard you order the humiliation of my wife."

Sterling gasped, looking desperately at Whitfield. "You said he couldn't hear anything!"

"He heard everything," I said, stepping forward into the light of the chandelier. "And so did I."

I opened my black notebook and threw it onto the mahogany desk right in front of Whitfield.

"In that book," I said clearly, "is a minute-by-minute log of every unauthorized chemical compound Dr. Whitfield injected into my husband. It includes serial numbers, timestamps, and the exact physical reactions Everett exhibited. Along with a copy of the electronic signature forgery software Whitfield used to destroy my nursing career three years ago."

Whitfield fell to his knees, clutching his briefcase to his chest. "Clara, please! I was forced! Sterling paid me five million dollars!"

"You ruined my life for money," I said coldly. "Now you get to pay it all back."
