Chapter 4 - The Shattered Illusion

The garden erupted into total chaos.

Guests stood up from their chairs, pulling out their smartphones to record the scene. The minister slowly lowered his bible, looking thoroughly bewildered, while Victoria Carter looked as if she were about to faint into her husband's arms.

"No... no, that's impossible!" Ethan screamed, clutching his head with both hands. He stumbled down the altar steps, staring at my daughter with an expression of sheer terror and staggering realization. "You... you were pregnant when we got divorced?! Why didn't you tell me?!"

I walked down the marble steps of the patio, my heels making a firm, rhythmic sound against the stone path as I approached the altar. I stopped five feet away from Ethan, holding my daughter safely against my chest.

"Why didn't I tell you, Ethan?" I asked, my voice dangerously calm. "Because the morning I discovered I was pregnant was the exact same morning I found you in our Lincoln Park condo bed with Lauren. When I tried to speak to you, you threw a set of divorce papers in my face and told me that a woman who couldn't bear children had no value in your family. Why would I ever share my child with a man who viewed her mother as disposable trash?"

"Emma..." Ethan gasped, stepping forward, his hands trembling as he reached out toward the baby. For the first time, a raw, primal look of paternal recognition flashed across his eyes. He looked at her dark hair—identical to his own—and her tiny nose. "She's... she's my daughter? My blood?"

"Don't touch her," I said coldly, stepping back out of his reach. "She doesn't carry your name. Her name is Maya Parker. And as of four hours ago, she is the sole legal beneficiary of my estate—and the primary claimant to yours."

Lauren suddenly grabbed Ethan's arm, her voice rising into an unhinged scream. "Ethan, stop looking at that kid! Look at me! I am your wife! I am carrying your son! We are getting married today!"

"Actually, Lauren," Harrison Vance interrupted, stepping between Lauren and Ethan with a cold smirk, "there will be no marriage today. Or any day."

Lauren glared at her uncle with pure hatred. "What are you talking about, Uncle Harrison?! You can't stop this wedding!"

"I don't need to stop it, Lauren," Harrison replied smoothly. "The State of Illinois is doing it for me."

Harrison signaled to the two Cook County Sheriff's deputies standing behind him. The deputies walked up the altar steps, pulling metal handcuffs from their belts.

"Lauren Vance," the lead deputy announced loudly, "you are under arrest for grand larceny, corporate bank fraud, identity theft, and conspiracy to commit wire fraud."

Lauren dropped her bouquet of ruined white roses, her eyes bulging in utter horror. "What?! Are you insane?! I haven't done anything wrong! Ethan, tell them!"

Ethan stood frozen, looking back and forth between the handcuffs, Lauren, and me, his mind completely overwhelmed. "Wait... arrest? What fraud?!"

I raised the black leather briefcase in my left hand and snapped the brass locks open with a sharp clack.

"Tell him about the eight million dollars, Lauren," I whispered.
