Chapter 6 - The Fall of Carter Capital

Within two hours, the grand wedding at the Magnolia Estate had completely dissolved into a media circus.

News helicopters buzzed in the autumn sky above Oak Brook, broadcasting live footage of Ethan Carter and Lauren Vance being led out of the luxury estate in handcuffs by Cook County Sheriff's deputies. The story dominated every major local and national news outlet in Chicago: Real Estate Mogul Arrested at Altar During Ex-Wife's Shocking Confrontation.

I sat comfortably in the back of Arthur's black sedan, far away from the chaotic media spectacle, holding Maya as she nursed quietly under a soft blanket. Harrison Vance sat across from me, reviewing the latest emergency filings on his tablet.

"The federal prosecutor has already frozen all domestic and offshore accounts belonging to Ethan Carter, Lauren Vance, and Carter Capital," Harrison reported, a cold, satisfied smile touching his lips. "Because the funds used to purchase the Magnolia Estate were directly traced to your stolen inheritance, my team has filed an emergency lis pendens. By tomorrow morning, you will officially hold title to the entire twenty-acre property."

"What about Carter Capital's corporate assets?" I asked quietly.

"Insolvent," Harrison replied smoothly. "When news of Ethan's arrest hit the financial markets an hour ago, his major investors pulled their capital immediately. The board of directors has initiated emergency liquidation protocols. Under Illinois divorce fraud statutes, because Ethan intentionally falsified his asset disclosures during your divorce, the court will vacate your original settlement agreement. You are entitled to one hundred percent of his remaining liquid assets, his Lincoln Park condominium, and full corporate restitution."

I looked down at Maya's tiny face. She had finished nursing and was staring up at me with bright, intelligent blue eyes.

"He tried to leave us with nothing," I murmured, gently rubbing her soft cheek. "He thought he could erase seven years of my life and build a paradise on my destruction."

"He underestimated you, Emma," Harrison said firmly. "He thought you were weak because you were quiet. Men like Ethan always mistake kindness and endurance for weakness."

The sedan pulled up outside my new residence—a stunning, secure penthouse overlooking Lake Michigan that I had leased six months ago using my private, untouched savings. Arthur opened the door, helping me step out with Maya into the crisp evening air.

As I walked into the warm, sunlit lobby of my building, my phone chimed with a text message from an unknown number. I opened it.

It was a frantic message from Victoria Carter, sent from her husband's phone: Emma, please! Ethan is being held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center! His bail has been set at three million dollars and all our family accounts are frozen because of the investigation! Please tell the prosecutors it was all Lauren's fault! Don't ruin my son's life! He is the father of your baby!

I stared at the message for a brief second. I didn't reply. I simply pressed the options button, selected Block Contact, and locked my phone.

Victoria had spent seven years treating me like an inferior servant who failed to produce a male heir for the prestigious Carter name. She had sneered at my family background, criticized my cooking, and openly encouraged Ethan to pursue younger women. Now, she was begging the "barren woman" to save her precious son.

I took the elevator up to the top floor, stepped into my quiet, beautiful home, and set Maya down in her crib in the newly decorated nursery. The room was bathed in soft pastel pinks, golds, and whites, filled with sunlight and flowers.

"You are safe now, my sweet girl," I whispered, turning on the soft lullaby mobile above her head. "No one will ever hurt us again."
