Chapter 5 - The Intrusion

"Perfect," a loud, mocking voice echoed through the dim room.
Ethan stepped inside, wearing his work clothes, looking smug and triumphant. Right behind him was Madison, carrying a leather notebook and looking around the room as if she owned it.
Dr. Mitchell immediately pulled the paper sheet over my abdomen, her face turning thunderous. "Excuse me! This is a private medical examination! You cannot just barge in here!"
"Relax, Doctor," Ethan sneered, crossing his arms and stepping toward the foot of the bed. "I'm the husband. Or at least, I'm the guy who paid for her health insurance before she cheated on me."
"Ethan, get out!" I yelled, sitting up on my elbows, holding the sheet to my chest. "How did you even know I was here?"
"Your mother-in-law saw the appointment reminder card on your kitchen counter when she picked up my clothes," Madison said smoothly, leaning against the counter near the door. "Ethan has a right to know the truth. We came to get a copy of the gestational age records for our legal filing."
"We're here to establish the timeline," Ethan said coldly, looking at Dr. Mitchell. "So go ahead, Doctor. Tell me how far along this other man's baby is. Is it eight weeks? Nine? Let's get it on the official record so my lawyer can end this farce."
Dr. Mitchell sat entirely still on her rolling stool. She didn't yell. She didn't call security. She slowly wiped the gel from her hands with a paper towel, her dark eyes locking onto Ethan with a look of absolute, icy authority.
"Mr. Carter," Dr. Mitchell said softly, her voice cutting through the room like a frozen blade. "Before you utter another ignorant, slanderous word against your wife... you need to step over here and take a very careful look at this monitor."
Ethan let out a bitter, dismissive laugh. "Why? I don't need to see a picture of another guy's child."
"Ethan," Dr. Mitchell warned, her tone so sharp that even Madison flinched. "Look at the screen."
Sensing a shift in the atmosphere, Ethan frowned, took two slow steps forward, and looked at the glowing blue monitor mounted on the wall. Madison stepped up beside him, squinting at the gray shapes.
"What am I supposed to be looking at?" Ethan asked, his tone still arrogant, though a faint note of hesitation crept into his voice. "It's a sac. A baby."
"Yes, that is Gestational Sac A," Dr. Mitchell said, pointing her digital stylus at the left side of the screen. "Containing a healthy fetus measuring eight weeks, six days. Perfectly matching the exact date of your marital reconciliation trip in mid-June."
Ethan scoffed. "So what? That still doesn't prove—"
"Now look over here," Dr. Mitchell interrupted, sliding the stylus three inches to the right side of the monitor screen.
A second, distinct dark circle appeared on the display.
Inside it was another tiny, flickering point of light.
Ethan froze. The words caught in his throat.
"That," Dr. Mitchell said with absolute precision, "is Gestational Sac B."
Madison leaned closer, her brows knitting together. "Wait... twins? She's having twins?"
"No," Dr. Mitchell said, turning her stool to face Ethan directly, her eyes narrowing. "Not twins in the conventional sense. Look at the measurement on Gestational Sac B, Mr. Carter."
She tapped the screen. The machine automatically displayed the calculated age based on the crown-rump length.
Gestational Sac B: 12 Weeks, 2 Days.
The entire room went deathly silent. The only sound was the faint, rhythmic beep of the ultrasound machine's power supply.
Ethan stared at the numbers. He blinked once. Twice. He looked at Sac A (8 weeks), then at Sac B (12 weeks).
"I... I don't understand," Ethan stammered, the smug arrogance vanishing from his face in a split second, replaced by complete, overwhelming confusion. "Twelve weeks? Eight weeks? That... that doesn't make sense. How can there be two different ages?"
Dr. Mitchell stood up from her stool, pulling her white coat tightly around herself.
"It makes perfect sense medically, Mr. Carter," Dr. Mitchell said, her voice dripping with profound disdain. "Your wife is experiencing an extremely rare medical phenomenon known as superfetation. It occurs when a woman becomes pregnant with a second child while already carrying a first, weeks apart."
Ethan’s face began to lose its color. "What... what does that mean?"
"It means," Dr. Mitchell said, stepping directly into Ethan's personal space, "that Gestational Sac B was conceived twelve weeks ago—a month before your vasectomy. A time when you and Lauren were living together as husband and wife."
The room seemed to tilt on its axis. Ethan's jaw hung open.
"And Gestational Sac A," Dr. Mitchell continued, pointing at the eight-week fetus, "was conceived eight weeks ago. Right around the time of your vasectomy, when your residual sperm count was still fully active because you failed to attend your mandatory post-procedure checkup."

The color drained entirely from Ethan's face. He looked like a man who had just been hit by a freight train.
"They are both yours, Mr. Carter," Dr. Mitchell delivered the final, devastating verdict. "You are expecting twins. Conceived a month apart. By you. And only you."
