Chapter 6 - The Avalanche of Truth

The silence in the examination room was absolute.
Ethan stood frozen, staring at the screen as if it were a terrifying specter. His hands began to tremble at his sides. He looked at the monitor—at the two distinct sacs, the two flickering heartbeats, the clear mathematical measurements—and then slowly turned his head to look at me.
"Two..." he whispered, his voice cracking violently. "They're... both mine?"
"Yes, you idiot!" I suddenly shouted, tears of absolute rage and relief exploding from my eyes. I pulled myself upright on the bed, swinging my legs over the edge, gripping the paper sheet around my waist. "They are both yours! I tried to tell you! I begged you to listen to me! I told you to check your medical records! But you were so eager to accuse me, so eager to run off with her, that you didn't care about the truth!"
Madison stood by the door, her face a mask of absolute, horrified shock. Her polished, smug demeanor had shattered completely.
"Ethan..." Madison stammered, reaching out a hand to touch his arm. "Is... is this true? Medically?"
Dr. Mitchell didn't wait for Ethan to answer. She walked over to her desk, pulled up her secure medical portal, and clicked on a file.
"In fact," Dr. Mitchell said cold and clear, "I just pulled up the surgical report from Dr. Stevens' office regarding your vasectomy in June, Mr. Carter. It explicitly notes that your anatomical structure possessed a rare double vas deferens variant on the left side. The surgeon sent you three urgent letters requesting a follow-up semen analysis because he suspected the procedure was incomplete."
She turned the computer screen around so Ethan could see the official hospital letters flagged in red.
"You ignored every single letter," Dr. Mitchell added grimly. "You walked around fertile, carrying a residual sperm count, while your wife was already carrying your first baby. And then you fathered a second one."
Ethan collapsed onto the small plastic chair near the wall, burying his face in his shaking hands. A horrific, breathless gasp escaped his chest.
"Oh God..." he sobbed, his voice muffled by his palms. "Oh God, what have I done...?"
"You abandoned your pregnant wife," I said, my voice cutting through his sobs like a razor. "You called me a cheater. You let your mother throw my things out. You dragged my name through the mud across the entire neighborhood. You posted pictures online with your mistress while I was sitting on the bathroom floor throwing up with your twins!"
Madison took a quick, panicked step back toward the door. The reality of the situation was settling over her like a suffocating cloud. She hadn't just helped a wronged husband escape an unfaithful wife; she had publicly participated in the destruction of an innocent pregnant woman carrying twins.
"Ethan," Madison whispered, her voice tight with panic. "We... we need to leave. We need to figure out what to do about the news..."
"Get out," Ethan choked out, pulling his hands away from his face. His eyes were red, filled with raw, naked horror as he looked at Madison. "Get out of here, Madison."
"What?" Madison gasped, looking offended. "Ethan, I supported you!"
"GET OUT!" Ethan roared, slamming his fist against the medical counter, knocking a box of latex gloves to the floor.
Madison flinched, looked at me with a flash of terror, turned on her designer heels, and fled down the hallway, her footsteps echoing rapidly until the door clicked shut.
Ethan turned back to me, dropping to his knees right there on the linoleum floor beside the examination bed. He reached out, trying to grab my hand, his face streaming with tears.
"Lauren... baby... please," he wept, his voice shaking with desperate, pathetic begging. "I'm so sorry... I was crazy... I was so scared and confused... Please, Lauren, forgive me... Those are my babies... Our babies..."

I slowly pulled my hand away from his reach, looking down at him with an absolute, terrifying coldness.
"Don't touch me, Ethan," I said softly. "Get off the floor."
