Chapter 3 - The Arrival of the Convoy

Exactly twenty minutes later, the groom’s father stood at the center pavilion, his microphone raised to deliver the traditional wedding toast. He was in the middle of a sentence praising the Vance family’s real estate dominance in South Florida when a low, vibrating rumble began to shake the ground beneath the guests' feet.

It didn't sound like thunder. It sounded like a mechanical beast tearing through the quiet streets of the historic district.

The roar of multiple high-displacement engines grew louder, drowning out the sound of the pavilion’s audio system. Suddenly, the heavy wrought-iron gates of the Royal Palms Plaza were pushed open by two security guards who looked physically terrified. Through the entryway, three massive, black armored SUVs with tinted windows and federal-grade security plates screeched to a halt, completely blocking the circular driveway and cutting off the valets.

The engines cut out simultaneously, leaving a heavy, suffocating silence in their wake.

The guests turned in their seats, their champagne glasses frozen midway to their lips. Richard Vance frowned, stepping forward from the head table, his corporate instincts immediately alerting him that something was deeply wrong. Only the highest level of government officials or international dignitaries traveled with that specific type of security detail in Miami.

The door to the center SUV opened.

From the vehicle stepped Blake Campbell.

A collective breath was drawn across the garden. Blake Campbell was the most reclusive, untouchable billionaire in South Florida. He was a man who controlled forty percent of the commercial real estate in downtown Miami, a developer whose private equity funds held the debt notes for nearly every major construction project in the state. He didn't attend galas. He didn't do interviews. He was a corporate ghost who operated from a penthouse overlooking Biscayne Bay, a man whose net worth made the Vance family look like small-town merchants.

Blake didn't look at the venue. He didn't look at the bride or the groom. He strode confidently across the lawn, his long legs moving with a terrifyingly purposeful stride. He was dressed in a dark, bespoke Italian suit, his hair slightly damp from the evening mist. As he walked, several prominent city commissioners and developers in the audience stood up, extending their hands in a desperate bid for a greeting, but Blake ignored them entirely. He didn't see them.

His eyes were locked completely on the main exit path, where Maya was standing near the security desk, her body shivering, her wet dress clinging to her form.

Blake closed the distance between them in seconds. Without a single word, he unbuttoned his thousand-dollar black cashmere overcoat, removed it from his broad shoulders, and draped it gently over Maya’s soaked, trembling frame. He reached out his large, warm hands, cupping her face with a tenderness that seemed entirely at odds with his cold, public reputation, and gently pressed his lips to her forehead.
