Chapter 4 - The Frozen Garden

A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the entire three hundred guests in the garden. The acoustic bass music had stopped completely. The only sound left was the soft rustle of the palm trees in the Atlantic breeze.
Richard Vance stood frozen by the pavilion, his champagne glass slipping from his fingers and shattering against the stone floor, the sparkling liquid pooling around his expensive leather shoes. His face, which had been bright red with arrogant laughter just twenty minutes ago, was now a pale, mottled gray. His mind was frantically trying to calculate the mathematical impossibility of the scene unfolding before him. His daughter—the black sheep, the failure, the woman he had just thrown into a fountain for entertainment—was being held by the man who held the keys to his entire corporate survival.
Penelope’s face had turned completely translucent, her bridal makeup looking like a grotesque mask against her sudden, intense panic. She looked at her new husband, but the young hedge-fund manager was already backing away from her slightly, his eyes wide with the realization that his new family had just committed social suicide on a global scale.
Blake turned around slowly, his arm remaining wrapped securely around Maya’s shoulders, pulling her against his side to share his warmth. His face was no longer tender; it was a mask of cold, clinical corporate destruction. His dark eyes scanned the crowd, stopping on Richard Vance.
"Mr. Vance," Blake’s voice wasn't loud, but it possessed a terrifying carrying power that reached every corner of the silent courtyard. "I believe you were just having my wife removed from the premises."
The word wife hit the garden like a nuclear warhead.
A low, frantic murmur erupted among the guests. Maya Vance had been married? To Blake Campbell? The realization rolled through the crowd like a wave of nausea. They hadn't just applauded the humiliation of a single woman; they had applauded the assault of Blake Campbell’s wife in front of three hundred witnesses, many of whom relied on Campbell’s banks to fund their businesses.
Richard took a stumbling step forward, his hands shaking as he tried to find his voice. "Blake... Mr. Campbell... there’s been a massive misunderstanding. We didn't know... Maya never told us... she came here alone tonight, without an invitation for a guest, and we thought—"

"You thought she was unprotected," Blake cut him off, his voice dropping an octave, a dangerous, razor-sharp edge bleeding into the tone. "You thought because she chooses to live her life without using my name for clout, that she was someone you could trample for the amusement of your guests."
Blake reached into his inner suit pocket and pulled out a sleek, black digital tablet. He didn't look at it; he simply handed it to his primary security guard, a massive man who had stepped up to his left side. "Activate the clause, Marcus. Every single commercial line of credit extended to Vance Development by Campbell Trust is to be called in for immediate default as of 8:00 AM tomorrow morning. Initiate the foreclosure protocols on the Royal Palms Plaza project immediately."
