PART 1: THE NIGHT I FINALLY SAW THE TRUTH

For months, I felt something changing inside our house.

Not something I could touch.

Not something I could prove.

Just a heavy feeling.

A darkness that appeared whenever my mother and my pregnant wife were in the same room.

My mother, Evelyn, always smiled when I was watching.

She asked Anna if she needed anything.

She cooked meals.

She touched her belly and talked about the baby.

To everyone else, she looked like the perfect mother-in-law.

But I noticed the small things.

The things nobody else saw.

Anna stopped laughing as much.

She stopped sitting at the dining table when my mother was there.

She stopped wearing the colorful dresses she loved.

Even the way she walked changed.

Careful.

Quiet.

Like she was trying not to disturb someone.

Every night, I asked her the same question.

“What’s wrong?”

And every night, she gave me the same answer.

“It’s nothing.”

But I knew it wasn’t.

One evening, she sat on the edge of our bed, one hand on her huge pregnant belly.

“Please,” she whispered.

“Don’t fight with your mother because of me.”

That sentence stayed in my mind.

Because a wife who feels loved asks for protection.

A wife who feels unsafe asks you not to make things worse.

I should have understood then.

I should have listened.

Because my mother was not trying to welcome Anna into the family.

She believed Anna had stolen me.

“She changed you.”

“She took you away from us.”

“She thinks the baby makes her more important.”

Those were the things my mother said when she thought I wasn’t listening.

I told myself she was just adjusting.

I told myself she was jealous.

I was wrong.

Very wrong.

Because that night, at exactly 3:12 in the morning, I woke up.

And Anna was gone.

The other side of the bed was cold.
