PART 2: THE SOUND FROM THE KITCHEN

At first, I thought Anna had gone to the bathroom.

I called her name quietly.

“Anna?”

No answer.

Then I heard it.

Water.

Running.

A plate hitting the floor.

A small sound.

A frightened sound.

A sob.

My body went cold.

I got out of bed immediately.

The hallway was dark.

The house was completely silent except for the noise coming from the kitchen.

As I walked closer, I heard my mother’s voice.

Low.

Calm.

Cruel.

“Stop moving.”

I froze.

I reached the kitchen doorway.

And what I saw destroyed every excuse I had ever made for my mother.

Anna was standing at the sink.

Nine months pregnant.

Her hair was wet.

Her hands were shaking.

Cold water poured over her fingers as she tried to wash dishes.

But she wasn’t alone.

My mother stood behind her.

One hand was gripping Anna’s hair.

Holding her in place.

Making sure she couldn’t move away.

My wife’s face was covered with tears.

Her eyes found mine.

And I saw everything.

The fear.

The exhaustion.

The pain she had hidden from me for months.

My mother leaned closer to her ear.

“You see?”

She whispered.

“Your husband is asleep.”

“He doesn’t know.”

Anna closed her eyes.

A tear fell onto the kitchen counter.

My mother smiled.

“Now we find out who really protects you.”

That was the moment something inside me broke.

Not anger.

Not rage.

Something deeper.

I realized my wife had been suffering while I kept asking her to be patient.

I realized I had protected my mother’s feelings more than my wife’s safety.

Slowly, my mother turned around.

She saw me standing there.

May you like

For the first time in my life...

she looked afraid.
