PART 1 — The Little Girl Who Chose The Maid

The most powerful people in the city gathered that night.

Billionaires.

Politicians.

Famous investors.

People whose names appeared on magazine covers and business headlines.

The banquet hall inside the Mercer Estate looked like something from a movie.

Crystal chandeliers hung from the ceiling.

Gold decorations covered the walls.

Waiters moved silently between guests carrying expensive champagne.

Women wore deep red gowns.

Men wore perfectly tailored tuxedos.

Everyone had come for one reason.

To celebrate the success of Alexander Mercer.

A man who built a billion-dollar empire from nothing.

A man who was feared in business.

A man who never lost.

But there was one person in the room who didn’t care about his money.

His six-year-old daughter.

Elena Mercer stood in the middle of the grand hall holding a small stuffed rabbit.

Her little fingers squeezed the toy tightly.

Her eyes were full of tears.

Everyone noticed.

Because Elena was supposed to be smiling.

She was supposed to stand beside her father.

She was supposed to be the beautiful little girl in the family photographs.

But instead…

she was looking around the room desperately.

Searching.

Waiting.

Alexander noticed from across the room.

He was surrounded by important guests when he saw his daughter standing alone.

His expression immediately changed.

“Excuse me.”

The powerful CEO walked away from the crowd.

The room watched.

Because everyone knew something unusual had happened.

Alexander Mercer didn’t stop meetings.

He didn’t interrupt conversations.

He didn’t leave important people waiting.

But for his daughter…

he did.

He approached Elena.

“Sweetheart.”

He lowered himself to her height.

“What happened?”

Elena didn’t answer.

She looked past him.

Searching again.

Alexander frowned.

“Elena?”

Her lips trembled.

Then she stepped backward.

Not toward him.

Away from him.

That hurt more than any insult.

Because his daughter had never done that before.

“I’m here,” he said gently.

“I’m your dad.”

But Elena shook her head.

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

“I don’t want you.”

The entire hall became silent.

People stopped talking.

Glasses stopped moving.

Even the musicians stopped playing.

Alexander froze.

Not because she was angry.

Because she sounded hurt.

“Sweetheart…”

He reached for her.

But Elena turned.

And pointed.

Not at him.

At someone behind him.

Everyone followed her finger.

It landed on a young woman standing near the service entrance.

A maid.

She wore a simple black uniform.

Her hair was tied back.

Her hands were folded nervously.

Her name was Clara.

She was one of the newest employees at the estate.

And she looked completely shocked.

“Her.”

Elena whispered.

Alexander looked confused.

“Clara?”

The little girl nodded.

“She’s the one I need.”

Clara’s eyes widened.

“Miss Elena?”

The guests began whispering.

A billionaire’s daughter was ignoring her own father…

to call for a maid?

Alexander looked at Clara.

Then back at Elena.

“Why?”

His voice was soft.

But everyone heard the pain in it.

Elena hugged her rabbit.

“She came when I cried.”

Alexander’s expression changed.

“When?”

Elena looked down.

“When Mommy’s room was empty.”

The words hit him.

Hard.

The room went quiet again.

Everyone knew about Elena’s mother.

Sophia Mercer.

She died two years earlier.

A sudden illness.

A tragedy Alexander never recovered from.

And Elena…

never recovered either.

Alexander swallowed.

“Sweetheart, why didn’t you tell me?”

Elena looked at him.

Because she was only six.

But her answer carried the weight of someone much older.

“Because you were always busy.”

The words cut deeper than anything.

Alexander opened his mouth.

But no words came.

Because he knew.

He had been there physically.

But maybe not emotionally.

After Sophia died, he buried himself in work.

Meetings.

Contracts.

Travel.

Anything to avoid the pain.

He thought providing everything was enough.

A bigger house.

More security.

More toys.

More gifts.

But he forgot the one thing Elena needed.

Him.

Clara slowly stepped forward.

“Mr. Mercer…”

Alexander looked at her.

“What happened?”

Clara hesitated.

The entire room was watching.

“I don’t think I should say.”

Elena grabbed Clara’s hand.

“Tell him.”

The maid looked at the little girl.

Then sighed.

“Miss Elena woke up three nights ago.”

Alexander frowned.

“What?”

“She was crying.”

Clara looked down.

“She was calling for her mother.”

Alexander’s face changed.

“I didn’t know.”

“No.”

Clara’s voice was gentle.

“You didn’t.”

That sentence was not an attack.

But somehow it hurt more.

Clara continued.

“She said she missed her mom.”

“She said everyone forgot her.”

Alexander looked away.

Because those words were true.

Not everyone.

But maybe he had.

Clara continued.

“I found her sitting on the floor outside her mother’s old room.”

“She was holding this rabbit.”

She touched Elena’s stuffed animal.

“She asked me if her mother would come back if she cried quietly.”

Alexander closed his eyes.

The image broke him.

His little girl.

Alone.

Crying.

Trying not to bother anyone.

And a stranger was the one who came.

Not him.

Elena looked at her father.

“She stayed with me.”

Her voice cracked.

“She didn’t tell me to stop crying.”

“She didn’t tell me I was being dramatic.”

A tear fell.

“She just hugged me.”

The room was completely silent.

Then Elena whispered:

“She was the only one who came.”

Alexander looked at Clara.

Really looked at her.

Not as an employee.

Not as someone who worked for him.

But as the person who had been there when he wasn’t.

“I didn’t know.”

His voice broke.

Clara lowered her eyes.

“I know, sir.”

And somehow…

that hurt even more.

Because she wasn’t angry.

She wasn’t blaming him.

She was simply telling the truth.

Alexander looked at his daughter.

For the first time in years…

he saw what he had missed.

Not a spoiled child.

Not a difficult child.

A little girl who was lonely.

Then something unexpected happened.

Elena walked toward Clara.

And held onto her.

In front of everyone.

The billionaire’s daughter.

The most powerful man in the room’s child.

Choosing the maid.

And Alexander realized something that night.

The person who saved his daughter’s heart…

was the person everyone else overlooked.

But the night was not over.

Because as the guests watched in silence…

an old family lawyer entered the hall.

And his face was pale.

“Mr. Mercer.”

Alexander turned.

“What is it?”

The lawyer looked at Elena.

Then at Clara.

Then whispered:

“You need to know what happened before Mrs. Mercer died.”

Alexander’s expression changed.

“Why?”

The lawyer handed him an envelope.

“Because your wife left something for Elena.”

A pause.

“And she specifically said…”

May you like

He looked at Clara.

“Only this woman should deliver it.”
