Chapter 7 - THE RESCUE IN THE SMOKE

Alessandro ignored his radio, ignored Vane’s calls, and took the marble stairs three at a time.
The second-floor hallway was filled with swirling grey smoke that stung his eyes and choked his lungs. The emergency lights cast a sick, orange glow through the haze.
"Elena!" Alessandro bellowed, his deep voice cutting through the blare of the fire alarms. "Elena!"
He reached the door of the master guest suite.
He slammed his shoulder against the heavy wood, but the iron deadbolt held firm.
"Elena! Open the door!" he roared, pounding his heavy fist against the panel.
From inside, he heard a muffled, frantic cough, followed by Elena’s desperate voice. "Alessandro! The lock... the heat expanded the iron frame! It's stuck! I can't turn the latch!"
The smoke in the corridor was thickening by the second, pouring out from the HVAC vents.
Alessandro stepped back three paces. He did not hesitate.
He raised his right boot and kicked the door directly beside the brass lock mechanism with every ounce of his six-foot-two frame.
The heavy wood splintered with a sound like a rifle shot. He kicked it a second time. The frame shattered, and the door swung violently inward.
Thick smoke poured into the bedroom.
Elena was on her knees near the far window, coughing violently, holding Mia wrapped tightly in a wool blanket against her chest. Mia was crying frantically, her small hands clutching her mother’s nightgown.
Alessandro rushed into the room, dropping low beneath the rising smoke layer.
He scooped both Elena and Mia into his massive arms, lifting them off the floor as if they weighed nothing.
"Hold onto my neck, Elena!" Alessandro commanded harshly, his lungs burning from the smoke.
Elena wrapped her arms tightly around his shoulders, burying her face in his neck, while Mia clung to his vest, her face pressed into his chest.
Alessandro turned and ran down the burning, smoky corridor toward the rear fire exit that led directly to the glass-enclosed skybridge connecting to the nursery wing.
He kicked open the skybridge fire door, stepping out into the clean, cool night air circulating through the reinforced structure.
He set Elena down against the wall.
Elena fell to her knees, taking deep, ragged gasps of fresh air, pulling Mia into her lap. Mia was coughing, but her eyes were clear.
Alessandro dropped to his knees beside them, his dark face covered in black soot, his eyes searching both of them with frantic intensity.
"Are you hurt?" he demanded, his voice rough and rasping. "Mia... are you hurt?"
Mia shook her small head, reaching out with a tiny, soot-stained finger to touch his cheek. "Car man... you have dirt on your face."
Alessandro let out a choked, ragged breath that sounded like a sob.
He wrapped his massive arms around both of them, pulling the young mother and her small child tight against his body, burying his face in Elena’s dark hair as the storm raged outside the glass.
Behind them, the sharp sound of rapid gunfire echoed from the far end of the property as Vane’s men eliminated the remaining Valenti enforcers near the north wall.
Matteo Valenti’s short, violent siege was over.
Alessandro pulled back, looking deeply into Elena’s tear-filled eyes.
"It's finished," Alessandro whispered, his hands holding her face with profound tenderness. "It's all over."

Elena looked at him, her dark eyes filled with absolute trust and devotion. "I knew you would come for us."
"Always," Alessandro swore softly. "Always."
