Chapter 9 - THE SECOND DAUGHTER

At three o'clock that afternoon, the sun was bright and warm, casting long gold beams through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the second-floor sitting room.
The room had been completely reorganized over the weekend. A wide wool play mat covered the center of the hardwood floor, scattered with wooden blocks, stuffed animals, and picture books.
Fourteen-month-old Sophia sat in the center of the mat, happily stacking plastic rings onto a wooden peg.
Beside her, Mia was sitting cross-legged, carefully showing the baby how to fit a round yellow ring over the top.
"See, Sophia?" Mia explained with utter toddler authority. "Yellow goes on top. Like a crown."
Sophia let out a high-pitched, happy squeal, clapping her little chubby hands together, knocking the peg over. Mia giggled, flopping back onto her back against the soft rug.
Elena sat on the nearby sofa, wearing a comfortable soft grey sweater and trousers, her dark hair resting loose over her shoulders. She was sipping a cup of chamomille tea, watching the children with a quiet, peaceful smile.
The door opened softly.
Alessandro stepped into the room.
He was not wearing a jacket or a tie. His white linen shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, his sleeves rolled up to his forearms. He walked without his usual stiff, commanding posture, his grey eyes soft and clear.
Sophia looked up instantly. "Dada!" she babbled, holding up a blue plastic ring.
Alessandro froze for a fraction of a second, a look of pure, unadulterated wonder washing over his face. It was the first time she had ever clearly spoken that word to him.
He dropped to his knees right on the play mat, stepping into the children's circle.
He reached out with both hands. This time, his fingers did not shake. His posture was smooth, strong, and completely devoid of fear.
He lifted fourteen-month-old Sophia into his arms, pulling her tight against his chest.
Sophia did not cry. She rested her little head directly against his collarbone, her chubby thumb tucked securely into her mouth, her small hand gripping the fabric of his shirt.
Alessandro closed his eyes, inhaling the sweet, clean smell of baby powder and warm milk, letting out a long, shuddering sigh that released eleven months of agonizing grief.
Mia scrambled over on her knees, leaning her head against Alessandro’s knee. "Is Sophia happy now, car man?"
Alessandro opened his eyes, reaching down with his free arm to scoop Mia up as well, pulling both small girls into a massive, warm embrace.
"Sophia is very happy, Mia," Alessandro said, his gravelly voice filled with a deep, emotional warmth. "Because of you."
Elena watched them from the sofa, tears of pure joy glistening in her dark eyes.
Alessandro looked up at Elena over the girls' heads. His pale blue eyes held an intense, unwavering question.
"Elena," he said softly.
"Yes, Alessandro?"
"I don't want you to be my housekeeper anymore," he said plainly.
Elena’s heart missed a beat. She set her tea down on the table, her hands trembling slightly. "Alessandro... what are you saying?"
Alessandro stood up smoothly, carrying both children in his arms, and walked over to stand directly in front of her.
"I am saying that this house is too big for three people," Alessandro said, his eyes locking onto hers with absolute sincerity. "I am saying that my daughter needs a mother. And I... I need you, Elena."
Elena stood up slowly, stepping close to him. She reached up, her palm resting gently against his cheek, feeling the soft warmth of his skin.
"And what about my daughter?" Elena whispered, her voice trembling.
Alessandro looked down at Mia, who was grinning up at him while holding her one-eared rabbit.
"Mia is not a housekeeper's daughter anymore," Alessandro declared softly, every word weighted with the absolute force of a vow. "She is a Moretti. She is my daughter, too."

Mia clapped her small hands. "I have two sisters! Barnaby and Sophia!"
Elena let out a soft, breathless laugh, tears finally spilling over her eyelashes as she leaned up and pressed her lips to Alessandro’s in a deep, loving kiss that sealed their new life together.
