Chapter 10 - The Rose Garden

One year later.

The south gardens of the Marchetti estate were in full bloom. White and yellow roses climbed the high stone walls, filling the warm spring air with a rich, sweet fragrance. The afternoon sun cast golden light across the manicured lawns where a hundred guests gathered under silk awnings.

It was the day of the annual Marchetti Foundation Gala—an event that had been transformed from an exclusive mafia party into the city's largest charity fundraiser for pediatric cardiac research.

On the wooden play structure near the rose garden, seven-year-old Clara ran with a group of children, her dark hair tied in bright ribbons, her laughter carrying over the gentle classical music played by a live orchestra near the terrace. Her heart was completely healed; she ran faster and longer than any child in her class.

Near the grand fountain stood Enzo and Adeline.

Adeline wore a breathtaking white silk gown with a modest lace train that caught the sun as she moved. On her arm hung a delicate gold bracelet—a gift from Enzo on the morning of their private wedding ceremony two months prior.

She held a glass of sparkling water, watching Clara play with a smile of pure contentment.

"She's running too fast," Enzo murmured, stepping up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist, resting his chin lightly on her shoulder. "She's going to wear out those new leather shoes."

"Let her run, Enzo," Adeline laughed softly, leaning back against his broad chest. "She has three years of missed childhood to make up for."

Ambrose approached on the stone terrace, carrying a silver tray with two glasses of vintage champagne. He looked immaculate, his silver hair neatly combed, a rare, genuine smile resting on his face.

"Master Marchetti, Dr. Croft-Marchetti," Ambrose said respectfully. "The Governor and the Chief of Surgery from Cook County Hospital have arrived. They are requesting a moment to discuss the expansion of the new trauma wing."

"Tell them we will be right there, Ambrose," Adeline said with a warm smile.

"Yes, Madam," Ambrose bowed, stepping away into the crowd.

Enzo turned Adeline in his arms, holding her close as the autumn breeze blew a few loose strands of dark hair across her face. He gently reached up and tucked them behind her ear, his thumb lingering against the soft skin of her jawline.

"Cook County Hospital offered you back your license yesterday, didn't they?" Enzo asked, his dark eyes searching hers.

"They did," she acknowledged quietly. "Full reinstatement, along with a formal public apology from the medical board."

"And what did you tell them?"

Adeline looked into his eyes—the eyes of the man who had stopped a whip in midair, who had bought a hospital wing for her daughter, who had protected her when she was a broken surgeon hiding in a maid's apron.

"I told them my place is here," she said softly, reaching up to lay her palm flat against his chest, feeling the strong, steady beat of his heart. "I am the Chief Medical Director of the Marchetti Foundation. I run three pediatric clinics across the lower wards. And... I have a family to take care of."

Enzo smiled—a warm, radiant smile that belonged only to her and Clara.

"You know," Enzo whispered, leaning down until his lips were inches from hers, "when you stepped into my hallway eleven days after taking that job, I thought you were just another maid."

"And what do you think I am now?" she challenged softly, her breath mingling with his.

May you like

"My savior," Enzo whispered, closing the small distance between them, pressing his lips to hers in a deep, passionate kiss under the golden sunlight of the rose garden. "My equal. My wife."

Beside them, the fountain splashed softly, the music played on, and across the green lawn, their daughter's laughter echoed bright and clear—a sweet, unbroken song in a house that had finally learned how to love.
