Chapter 5 - The Boardroom Confrontation

The headquarters of Marchetti Logistics occupied the top three floors of a sleek glass skyscraper overlooking Lake Michigan. It was the legitimate face of the Marchetti empire—a multi-billion-dollar shipping, warehousing, and transport corporation that moved twenty percent of the freight passing through the Midwest.
At 7:55 AM, the glass-walled executive boardroom on the fortie-fifth floor was filled with sixteen men in expensive grey and blue suits. Among them sat Arthur Ashford, Camila's father—a silver-haired man with cold blue eyes and a calculating expression that belonged to an old-money aristocrat who viewed everyone else as disposable pawns.
The heavy mahogany doors opened.
Enzo Marchetti walked into the room. He wore a dark charcoal three-piece suit, his posture radiating lethal authority. But it was not his presence that caused a ripple of stunned whispers to pass through the room.
It was the woman walking half a step behind his left shoulder.
Adeline Croft was transformed. She wore a tailored black pantsuit that hugged her slender frame with sharp precision, a silk ivory blouse buttoned to the collar, and her dark hair pulled back into a flawless, professional bun. On her feet were simple black leather pumps that clicked with crisp, rhythmic certainty against the polished hardwood floor. In her hand, she carried a sleek leather document case.
There was no trace of the gray housekeeping dress. No white apron. Only her posture—the cool, unshakeable confidence of an elite professional—remained.
Arthur Ashford stood up, his brow furrowing as he recognized her face from his daughter's furious middle-of-the-night phone calls.
"Enzo," Arthur said, his voice dripping with condescension as he gestured toward Adeline. "What is the meaning of this? Why is a domestic servant attending a private executive board meeting?"
Enzo took his place at the head of the conference table, waiting until the room fell completely silent before speaking. He didn't offer a chair to Arthur; he simply motioned for Adeline to sit at his immediate right hand—the seat traditionally reserved for the company's chief legal officer or second-in-command.
"This is Dr. Adeline Croft," Enzo announced, his voice carrying clearly over the soft hum of the air conditioning. "As of this morning, she has been appointed Chief Medical Officer and Special Risk Analyst for Marchetti Logistics."
A wave of astonished murmurs broke out among the board members.
"Is this a joke?" Arthur Ashford scoffed, turning to the other board members for support. "She's a disgraced doctor who was stripped of her license for killing a patient! And last night, she was caught assaulting my daughter in your own hallway! Camila is traumatized, Enzo! She demands this woman be handed over to the authorities immediately!"
Enzo didn't raise his voice. He leaned forward, resting his hands flat on the glass tabletop, his eyes locking onto Arthur with a cold, predatory focus that made the older man's smile falter.
"Your daughter," Enzo said quietly, "is currently under house arrest at your estate, Arthur."
Arthur gasped, his face flushing crimson. "You dare—"
"I dare whatever I choose in this city, Arthur," Enzo interrupted, his tone chillingly casual. "Dr. Croft did not assault your daughter. Dr. Croft intercepted a glass of wine that your daughter had laced with a lethal dose of digitalis, intended for Senator Vance's wife."
The boardroom exploded into chaos. Two board members stood up in shock; others began talking over one another in hushed, panicked tones.
"That is a slanderous lie!" Arthur shouted, slamming his fist onto the table. "You have no proof! You're fabricating stories to break off the engagement because you want to keep the shipping rights for yourself!"
Adeline opened her leather case with two quiet metallic snaps. She pulled out a stack of neatly bound, professional medical files and distributed them down both sides of the long conference table.
"Page three, gentlemen," Adeline said, her voice clear, sharp, and utterly devoid of fear as she addressed the room of syndicate bosses and corporate executives. "That is the chemical spectrographic analysis of the residue recovered from the glass last night, executed by an independent forensic lab at Chicago General Hospital. Page five is the toxicology report from the exhumation of the late Don Antonio Marchetti's remains, conducted six hours ago under federal medical order."
Arthur Ashford's face went from crimson to a sickly, ash-grey in a matter of seconds. His hands began to tremble as he stared at the document sitting before him.
" Antonio Marchetti died of chronic digitalis toxicity over a period of seven months," Adeline continued, stepping around the table to stand beside Enzo, her stance perfectly composed. "A toxicity that could only have been administered through daily, micro-dosed additions to his cardiac medication. A medication supplied exclusively by Ashford Pharmaceutical Distribution."
She looked directly into Arthur Ashford's terrified eyes.
"As a former board-certified surgeon and chief of trauma," Adeline added coldly, "I am prepared to testify under oath before the State Medical Board and the Federal Grand Jury that the murder of Antonio Marchetti was a premeditated assassination orchestrated by the Ashford family."
The boardroom was as quiet as a tomb.
Arthur Ashford looked around the table, looking for his allies among the board members, but every single man turned their head away, refusing to meet his eyes. In the syndicate, loyalty was absolute until treason was proven with cold, hard documentation.
Enzo slowly stood up from his chair. He didn't pull a weapon; he didn't need to. The sheer weight of his authority crushed the room.
"The merger between Marchetti Logistics and Ashford Pharmaceuticals is canceled," Enzo declared softly. "All Ashford family assets within the tri-state area are frozen as of nine o'clock this morning under section four of the Syndicate Charter."
He turned to two large men in dark suits who stepped out from the shadows near the boardroom doors.
"Escort Mr. Ashford to his vehicle," Enzo ordered. "He has two hours to leave Chicago. If he, or his daughter, is found within fifty miles of this city after noon... they will be treated as hostile combatants."
Arthur was pulled from his chair by his lapels, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water, unable to utter a single word of protest as he was dragged from the room.
Enzo looked around at the remaining board members, who sat rigid in their seats, staring at him in absolute terror and awe.

"Meeting adjourned," Enzo said calmly.
He turned to Adeline, offering her his arm with the crisp, courtly formality of an old-world gentleman. "Shall we go, Dr. Croft? We have a hospital to visit."
