Chapter 3 - The Divorce and the Depths of Despair

Three days after the birth of her son, Elena Montgomery—no longer Elena Vance—stood by the window of the master suite at the Montgomery estate.

The estate was a sprawling, historic manor nestled on a private peninsula in Lake Forest, surrounded by ancient oaks and guarded by a security perimeter that rivaled a military base. Inside, the air was warm, smelling of lavender, beeswax, and the sweet, milky scent of newborn Leo, who was sleeping peacefully in a hand-carved mahogany cradle near the fireplace.

Elena wore a soft, cream-colored cashmere robe. Her skin was still pale, but the dark circles of exhaustion and stress that had marred her face for the last three years were finally beginning to fade. For the first time in what felt like an eternity, she could breathe without a heavy, suffocating weight on her chest.

A soft knock sounded at the door, and her father entered, carrying a silver tray with hot tea and a thick manila folder.

"How is my grandson?" Arthur asked, his voice softening as he looked toward the cradle.

"He's perfect," Elena smiled, walking over to press a gentle kiss to Leo’s forehead. "He sleeps through the night. I think he knows he's safe here."

"He is," Arthur said, setting the tray down on the coffee table. He sat on the velvet sofa, tapping the manila folder. "Our legal team has been busy, Elena. The divorce petition was filed yesterday afternoon. Under normal circumstances, a divorce in this state takes months. But given the... evidence of psychological abuse, financial fraud, and the outstanding criminal investigation into Richard’s businesses, the judge has expedited the process."

Elena sat down across from him, wrapping her hands around the warm tea mug. "And Richard?"

"He tried to fight the asset freeze," Arthur said with a dry chuckle. "He hired a public defender after every private firm in the city blacklisted him. The judge threw out his motion in less than five minutes. He’s currently living in a cheap motel near O'Hare. The lease on his luxury vehicles has been terminated, and his personal belongings from the penthouse were packed into garbage bags and left at the motel front desk."

"And Tiffany?"

"She filed a restraining order against him yesterday," Arthur replied, pulling a document from the folder. "Apparently, they had a rather public screaming match in the parking lot of her mother’s apartment complex. She’s also attempting to claim child support for her unborn baby, but since Richard’s personal income is now officially zero, she won't be receiving a dime. Her high-society friends have completely abandoned her. She’s back to working as a receptionist at a dental clinic in the suburbs."

Elena took a slow sip of her tea, feeling a profound sense of closure, but also a lingering spark of caution. She knew Richard. He was not a man who went down quietly. He was a narcissist, and to a narcissist, humiliation was worse than death.

"He's going to try something, Dad," Elena said quietly. "He won't just let me walk away with Leo. He viewed Leo as his trophy, his 'heir.' He won't accept that a 'mousy nobody' defeated him."

"Let him try," Arthur said, his eyes turning cold and hard. "I have twenty-four-hour security on this estate. Every time you leave this house, you will have a team with you. Richard is a rat cornered in a trap, Elena. And rats are dangerous only when you don't see them coming. We see him."

In a cramped, dirty room at the Elston Motor Inn, the air smelled of stale cigarettes and cheap disinfectant.

Richard sat on the edge of a sagging mattress, surrounded by empty takeout containers and half-empty bottles of cheap whiskey. The television was on, the screen flickering with a local news segment about the sudden collapse of Vance Development Group. The news anchor was speaking of "massive financial irregularities" and "allegations of money laundering."

Richard didn't hear the TV. His eyes were locked on a series of printed photographs scattered across the stained carpet.

They were photos of Elena.

In some, she was leaving the hospital, looking radiant and healthy, surrounded by guards. In others, she was sitting on the terrace of the Montgomery estate, holding Leo in her arms, smiling up at the sky. She looked beautiful. She looked rich. She looked entirely out of his reach.

"She took everything," Richard muttered, his voice hoarse, his throat dry. He took a long swig from the bottle, the alcohol burning his stomach but doing nothing to dull the white-hot rage in his chest. "She planned this. She let me think I was in control, and then she pulled the rug."

His phone—a cheap, prepaid burner he had bought at a gas station—buzzed on the nightstand.

He picked it up, expecting his public defender, but the number was blocked. He pressed answer. "What?"

"Richard," a slick, heavily accented voice said. "I hear you are having a run of bad luck."

Richard sat up, his muscles tensing. "Who is this?"

"My name is Victor Petrov," the voice said. "My family has... let us say, a long-standing business disagreement with Arthur Sterling. He has been encroaching on our territory in the shipping yards. We have been looking for a vulnerability in his armor for a long time."

Richard’s heart began to beat faster. The Petrovs. He knew the name. They were one of the most ruthless criminal syndicates in the Midwest, involved in everything from extortion to illegal smuggling.

"What do you want with me?" Richard asked.

"You have access, Richard," Victor said smoothly. "You know the daughter. You know the child. Arthur Sterling is a ghost; he hides behind ten layers of security. But his daughter... she is soft. She has a routine. If we can get to her, we can force Sterling to relinquish his control of the eastern ports."

"She’s at the Montgomery estate," Richard said, his voice trembling with a mixture of fear and sudden, manic excitement. "It's a fortress. You can't get in."

"Every fortress has a gatekeeper, Richard," Victor murmured. "And you know her better than anyone. You know her fears. You know her schedule. Help us get inside, help us take the child, and we will ensure that Arthur Sterling’s empire is dismantled. You will get your company back, Richard. You will get your dignity back. And Elena... well, Elena will finally learn her place."

Richard looked down at the photo of Elena holding Leo. The anger in his chest hardened into a dark, irreversible decision.

"Tell me what you need me to do," Richard whispered.
