Chapter 4 - The Rat Corners Himself

The pediatric clinic was located in a quiet, upscale neighborhood in Lake Forest, designed specifically to cater to high-profile families who demanded privacy and discretion.

Elena stepped out of the armored SUV, her eyes scanning the quiet, tree-lined street. Beside her stood Marcus, the head of her security detail—the same scarred, silent man who had taken Leo from Tiffany’s arms in the hospital. Marcus carried the diaper bag, his eyes constantly moving, checking the rooftops, the parked cars, and the pedestrians walking their dogs.

"Everything looks clear, Ms. Montgomery," Marcus said, his hand resting casually near his jacket lapel. "We have two men stationed at the back exit and one in the lobby."

"Thank you, Marcus," Elena said, holding Leo close to her chest. The baby was bundled in a soft blue blanket, sleeping peacefully against her shoulder.

They walked into the clinic, the glass doors sliding shut behind them. The interior was peaceful, decorated in soft pastels with a large aquarium in the center of the waiting room.

For thirty minutes, the world felt normal. The pediatrician, a kind, elderly woman who had known Elena since she was a child, examined Leo, pronouncing him healthy, strong, and growing perfectly. Elena felt a surge of maternal pride, a deep, warm sensation that made her feel invincible.

But as they walked back into the lobby to check out, the fire alarm suddenly began to wail.

The high-pitched screech was deafening. The overhead sprinklers did not activate, but the strobe lights began to flash, casting the lobby in disorienting, rhythmic pulses of white light.

"Marcus!" Elena gasped, her grip tightening on Leo.

"Stay behind me, ma'am," Marcus said instantly, drawing his firearm with a smooth, practiced motion. He reached for his earpiece. "Team Alpha, status. We have an alarm. Do we have a breach?"

Only static answered him.

"The jammer," Marcus hissed, his face hardening. "They've cut our comms. We need to move. Now."

He guided Elena toward the rear exit, but before they could reach the door, it was kicked open.

Three men in dark tactical gear, their faces covered by black balaclavas, poured into the hallway. Marcus fired two shots, the loud cracks of his pistol echoing off the narrow walls. One of the attackers crumpled to the floor, but the other two returned fire, the bullets tearing into the drywall and scattering plaster dust into the air.

"Go! Go!" Marcus roared, pushing Elena back toward the main lobby. He stood his ground, firing methodically to cover their retreat.

Elena ran, her heart hammering against her ribs, her breath coming in ragged gasps. Leo began to cry, terrified by the noise and the sudden, violent movement. She burst back into the waiting room, looking for an escape, but the front glass doors were locked—shattered but held in place by their security laminate, blocking any exit to the street.

"Elena."

The voice was quiet, raspy, and completely familiar.

Elena spun around.

Standing near the large aquarium was Richard. He looked thin, disheveled, his eyes wide and bloodshot, filled with a manic, terrifying energy. He was holding a small, silver pistol, his hand shaking but pointed directly at her.

"Richard..." Elena whispered, backing away until her spine hit the reception desk. "What are you doing? This is madness. You'll go to prison forever."

"I'm already in prison, Elena!" Richard shrieked, his voice cracking. "Look at me! I am living in a ten-dollar-a-night dump! I have nothing! No money, no company, no respect! My own family won't even look at me! And it's all because of you!"

"You did this to yourself, Richard," Elena said, trying to keep her voice steady, trying to channel the strength she had seen in her father. "You stole from your own company. You cheated on me. You tried to take my son from my arms when I was too weak to fight back."

"He's my son!" Richard screamed, taking a step closer. The water in the aquarium behind him bubbled peacefully, a bizarre contrast to the violence in the room. "He's a Vance! He was supposed to carry on my name! He was supposed to make me great!"

"He is a Montgomery," Elena said, her voice dropping into a hard, unyielding tone. "And he will never know your name."

Richard’s face contorted with a sudden, animalistic rage. He raised the gun, aiming it at her chest. "If I can't have him, if I can't have my life back... then nobody gets him."

He squeezed the trigger.

But the shot did not come from his gun.

A deafening crack shattered the glass of the aquarium behind him. A heavy, high-velocity rifle round tore through the thick acrylic, the water exploding outward in a massive, glittering wave of blue and orange fish.

The bullet had passed cleanly through Richard’s right shoulder.

The force of the impact spun him around, his pistol flying from his hand and clattering across the wet floor. He fell to his knees, clutching his shoulder as water and glass rained down around him.

Through the shattered front doors of the clinic, Arthur Sterling stepped inside.

He was flanked by six heavily armed tactical officers, their rifles raised. Arthur did not wear a helmet or a vest; he wore his signature charcoal suit, his face completely expressionless as he walked through the water, his shoes crunching on the broken glass.

He stopped in front of the groaning Richard, looking down at him with the cold, detached curiosity of a man observing an insect on a sidewalk.

"Did you really think I wouldn't know about the Petrovs, Richard?" Arthur asked softly. "I let them think their jammer worked. I let them think they had an opportunity. I needed you to show your hand, Richard. I needed you to commit a federal crime on camera so I could ensure you never see the light of day again."

He looked at Elena, his gray eyes softening instantly. "Are you alright, sweetheart?"

May you like

Elena, her clothes damp from the exploding aquarium water, looked down at Leo, who had finally quieted, his small face buried in her neck.

"We're okay, Dad," she whispered. "We're okay."
