Part 6: The Impossible Choice

Part 6: The Impossible Choice
Arthur stood completely still.
The phone remained pressed against his ear.
But he wasn’t hearing the woman anymore.
He wasn’t hearing the café.
He wasn’t hearing anything.
Because on the screen…
Was Sarah.
Lily’s mother.
Alive.
Barely.
But alive.
Her face was pale.
Her eyes were closed.
Her hands were tied behind her.
The woman who had protected these children.
The woman who had run from people who wanted to use her baby.
And now she was being used as a weapon.
Against them.
“Where is she?”
Arthur’s voice was low.
The woman on the phone smiled.
“Does it matter?”
Arthur’s eyes hardened.
“Yes.”
A pause.
“Because if you hurt her…”
He looked around the café.
His security team stood ready.
Margaret held the children close.
Arthur continued:
“You will regret it.”
The woman laughed softly.
“Still trying to control everything.”
Arthur didn’t respond.
The woman continued.
“You rich men always think money can solve every problem.”
A pause.
“But you know what money cannot buy?”
Arthur stared at the screen.
“What?”
“Time.”
The call ended.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Margaret whispered:
“They have Sarah.”
Arthur nodded.
“I know.”
Ethan stepped forward.
“We have to save Mommy.”
Arthur looked at him.
“Yes.”
The boy looked confused.
“But you said nobody would touch us.”
Arthur’s expression softened.
“I meant it.”
A pause.
“I’m going to bring her back.”
Margaret shook her head.
“You don’t understand.”
Arthur looked at her.
“Then explain.”
She lowered her voice.
“They will expect you to come.”
“Good.”
“No.”
Margaret stepped closer.
“That’s exactly what they want.”
Arthur knew she was right.
A trap.
A simple one.
Bring the baby.
Save the mother.
But something bothered him.
Why reveal Sarah?
Why call him?
Why give him a choice?
Unless…
Unless the choice itself was the trap.
Arthur looked at Lily.
The baby was sleeping again.
Peaceful.
Like the world around her wasn’t collapsing.
Then he noticed something.
Her tiny hand was holding Ethan’s finger.
The boy looked exhausted.
“How long have you been protecting her?”
Ethan looked up.
“Since Mommy disappeared.”
“How old are you?”
“Ten.”
Arthur felt something tighten in his chest.
Ten years old.
A child.
Forced to become a protector.
“Where is your father?”
Ethan became quiet.
Margaret answered.
“He died.”
Arthur looked at her.
“How?”
She hesitated.
Then:
“He was part of the research.”
The words landed heavily.
“He tried to expose them.”
Arthur frowned.
“And they killed him?”
Margaret nodded.
The old man looked away.
He had seen enough of the world to know.
People with power rarely stopped after one crime.
They buried the evidence.
They buried the witnesses.
They buried anyone who could reveal them.
Then his security chief, Michael, approached.
“Mr. Bennett.”
Arthur looked up.
“Yes?”
“We traced the phone signal.”
Everyone waited.
“And?”
Michael’s face was serious.
“It came from an abandoned medical facility outside the city.”
Margaret immediately reacted.
“The old research center.”
Arthur looked at her.
“You know it?”
She nodded.
“That’s where Sarah worked.”
Arthur understood.
The past.
The place where everything started.
The place where Lily became a target.
He looked at Michael.
“How many people?”
“We don’t know.”
“Estimate.”
“Could be twenty. Could be more.”
Arthur nodded.
Then Michael added:
“Sir.”
“What?”
“There’s something else.”
“What?”
Michael looked uncomfortable.
“The facility belongs to a company.”
Arthur frowned.
“Which company?”
Michael handed him a tablet.
Arthur looked at the screen.
Then froze.
The company name.
A name he knew.
A name that made his face change.
“Bennett Medical.”
The world stopped.
His company.
His own company.
The same empire he built.
The same company people praised.
The same company that made him billions.
Arthur slowly lowered the tablet.
“No.”
Michael looked at him.
“Sir?”
“That’s impossible.”
Margaret stared.
“You didn’t know?”
Arthur didn’t answer.
Because he didn’t.
For years, he had been too busy fighting his own body.
Too busy blaming doctors.
Too busy disappearing from the world.
He trusted his executives.
He trusted his board.
He trusted the people around him.
And someone had used his name.
His company.
His money.
To create this nightmare.
Arthur closed his eyes.
A painful truth hit him.
Maybe the miracle that saved him…
Was also the thing his own company had tried to create.
“Who runs the medical division?”
Michael hesitated.
Arthur opened his eyes.
“Answer me.”
Michael swallowed.
“Your former vice president.”
Arthur froze.
“Name.”
Michael said quietly:
“Jonathan Vale.”
Arthur remembered.
Jonathan.
His closest friend.
The man who visited him every week after the accident.
The man who told him:
“Forget business. Focus on healing.”
The man he trusted.
Arthur’s hands tightened.
“No.”
Michael looked at him.
“Sir?”
Arthur stared at the old medical facility location.
“He’s behind this.”
Before anyone could react, Lily suddenly woke.
Crying.
Not a normal cry.
A terrified one.
Ethan picked her up.
“Lily?”
The baby looked around.
Her tiny fingers reached toward Arthur.
Everyone noticed.
Arthur slowly moved closer.
“Me?”
The baby grabbed his hand.
The moment she touched him—
Arthur felt something.
Not pain.
Not warmth.
A memory.
A flash.
A room.
White walls.
Bright lights.
A woman crying.
Sarah.
And a man standing over her.
A man Arthur recognized.
Jonathan Vale.
Arthur pulled his hand back.
His face turned pale.
He had seen it.
Lily wasn’t just showing memories.
She had shown him proof.
Jonathan was there.
The baby started crying again.
Arthur whispered:
“She knows.”
Everyone looked at him.
Arthur looked toward the road.
His voice became cold.
“Jonathan Vale has Sarah.”
Michael asked:
“What’s the plan?”
Arthur stood straighter.
His legs shook.
But he didn’t fall.
“Bring the team.”
Michael nodded.
“And Lily?”
Arthur looked at the baby.
Then at Ethan.
“We bring her.”
Margaret stepped forward.
“No.”
Arthur turned.
“They want her.”
“Yes.”
“They will hurt her.”
Arthur’s expression softened.
“I know.”
A pause.
“But I learned something today.”
He looked at Lily.
“Sometimes the smallest person in the room is the strongest.”
The old man who couldn’t walk for twenty years took his first steps toward danger.
Not for money.
Not for power.
For a child.
But as they prepared to leave…
Arthur’s phone received one final message.
From Jonathan Vale.
A photo.
Taken inside the facility.
It showed Sarah.
And beside her…
A man lying on a medical bed.
Arthur stared.
Because he knew that face.
The man everyone believed was dead.
The man who had been missing for years.
The man connected to everything.
Daniel Bennett.
Alive.
And the message said:
“Bring Lily.”
“Bring Arthur.”
May you like
“Because tonight…”
“Everyone gets the truth.”
