Chapter 4 - The Vault of Secrets

The video file opened with a timestamp: Four days ago. 10:14 PM.
The camera angle was high, looking down from the ceiling of the grand mahogany library inside the Sterling mansion. The room was luxurious, filled with leather bound books, expensive artwork, and a massive marble fireplace.
Marcus stared at the screen, his breathing shallow, his body going entirely rigid.
In the center of the room stood Lily. She was clutching her small drawing notebook to her chest, her eyes wide with curiosity as she looked at a hidden panel that had been left open beside the fireplace. Inside the panel was a small, high-tech wall safe.
Before Lily could touch anything, the heavy oak doors of the library were thrown open.
Rowan and Julian Sterling strode into the room, their faces red, their postures aggressive. Rowan immediately lunged forward, grabbing Lily by her hair and throwing her violently to the floor. The drawing book fell from her hands, sliding across the polished wood.
"Please, Uncle Rowan! I was just looking for my book!" Lily cried on the video, the audio capture surprisingly clear and sharp.
"You little rat!" Julian roared, reaching down to grab her arm, pulling it behind her back with a sickening, violent wrench. A sharp, distinct pop echoed through the speakers of the laptop.
Lily let out a scream that made Marcus’s blood run cold. It was the scream of a child experiencing a level of pain she could not comprehend.
Then, the camera captured the door opening.
Chloe Sterling stepped into the frame. She looked at her daughter writhing on the floor, her arm twisted at an unnatural angle. She looked at her brothers, whose faces were filled with a sick, sadistic pleasure.
"Rowan... Julian... stop," Chloe said, her voice weak, carrying no real conviction. "She’s just a child. Someone might hear."
"Shut the door, Chloe," Rowan barked, not even looking at her as he raised his boot, stamping it down directly into Lily's ribs. "And close the damn curtain. If you don't have the stomach for this, go back to your room."
Chloe stood frozen for three agonizing seconds. She looked at her daughter, who was reaching out her unbroken hand, begging her for help.
Then, Chloe reached out, grabbed the heavy velvet curtain by the door, and pulled it shut.
She turned her back on her own daughter and walked away.
The video continued, but it wasn't the violence that made Marcus’s breath catch completely in his throat. It was what happened after.
With Lily lying unconscious on the floor, bleeding from her temple, Rowan turned to the open safe. He reached inside and pulled out a small, heavy silver USB drive and a stack of physical documents bearing the official seal of the United States Department of Defense.
"Is the transit ready?" Julian asked, wiping a drop of sweat from his forehead as he looked down at Lily’s limp body.
"Yes," Rowan replied, sliding the USB drive into his breast pocket. "The container ships are leaving the port of Wilmington on Friday. Once these documents are delivered to the contact in Moscow, the Sterling Group will be cleared of all our outstanding debt. The government will never know the guidance systems were compromised before they were shipped."
Marcus’s eyes widened.
The Sterling family’s primary business was logistics and international shipping, often contracted by the military for sensitive defense equipment. They weren't just corrupt local politicians and abusive monsters.
They were committing high treason.
They were selling stolen, compromised military guidance systems to foreign adversaries.
"My god," Colonel Miller whispered, his voice dripping with a cold, professional fury. "They aren't just a powerful family anymore, Marcus. They are a national security threat. That USB drive contains the source code for our active missile defense network."
"They beat my daughter because she saw the safe open," Marcus said, his voice dropping into a register that was so quiet, so cold, it sounded like death itself. "They thought she would tell me what she saw."

He stood up, looking at his team.
"Now they have a reason to be afraid."
