Chapter 4 - The Metropolitan Center

The Metropolitan Center was glowing beneath golden lights when our motorcade arrived at 7:45 PM.

Reporters, society photographers, and news crews lined the red carpet behind silver velvet ropes. Flashbulbs exploded continuously as Chicago’s business elite, politicians, and celebrities stepped out of luxury sedans.

Word had already leaked that Veil Urban was facing internal turmoil, but the official story remained that tonight was a celebration of ten years of corporate success.

Inside the grand ballroom, three hundred guests mingled beneath crystal chandeliers, drinking vintage champagne while a twenty-piece orchestra played soft jazz.

Richard stood near the main stage, looking impeccably groomed in a velvet tuxedo. Beside him, Cassandra Moore wore an emerald green gown, holding a glass of wine and smiling brightly for the camera of a prominent business magazine.

Richard looked confident, but if you looked closely at his collar, you could see the beads of sweat forming along his hairline. His phone was vibrating in his pocket every thirty seconds.

The Hawthorne lenders had given him until 9:00 PM to present the signed financing compliance documents.

At 8:05 PM, the heavy oak doors at the main entrance of the ballroom swung open.

The master of ceremonies stepped up to the microphone near the foyer, his voice echoing across the quieted room.

“Announcing... Mr. Thomas Mercer, Chairman of Mercer Global.”

A collective gasp rippled through the room.

Thomas Mercer rarely attended public galas. He was a mythic figure in international finance, a man whose presence at an event usually signaled a major acquisition or a corporate takeover.

Richard’s face lit up with desperate triumph. He immediately adjusted his jacket and stepped forward to greet the billionaire whose endorsement could save his company.

“Mr. Mercer!” Richard called out, holding out his hand as Thomas stepped into the warm glow of the chandeliers. “It is an absolute honor to have you here tonight. Veil Urban is deeply privileged—”

Richard stopped mid-sentence.

The air seemed to leave his lungs all at once.

Stepping out from behind Thomas Mercer, her hand resting gracefully on his arm, was me.

My navy velvet gown caught the golden light. My head was held high, my dark hair falling in soft waves over my shoulders. My left cheek was deliberately un-contoured, allowing the light to catch the distinct outline of the bruise beneath my light makeup.

Beside me, my father walked with slow, regal power.

The entire ballroom went dead silent.

Photographers stopped flashing. Wine glasses froze halfway to people’s lips.

Cassandra Moore lowered her champagne glass, her eyes widening in sheer terror as she recognized the man standing beside the woman she had mocked twenty-four hours ago.

Richard stood frozen, his hand still extended in mid-air, his face turning an unsightly shade of pale grey.

“E... Evelyn?” Richard stammered, his voice squeaking slightly. “What... what are you doing here? You’re supposed to be resting.”

He looked frantically at Thomas Mercer, trying to connect the dots in his panicking mind.

“Mr. Mercer... I don't understand. Why are you with my wife?”

Thomas Mercer stopped two feet from Richard. He did not take Richard’s offered hand. He looked down at Richard as if he were a minor smudge of dirt on an expensive carpet.

Then, Thomas raised his deep, resonant voice so that it carried across the entire silent ballroom, reaching every reporter, every investor, and every board member.

“I am standing with her, Richard,” Thomas said clearly, “because Evelyn Hart is not just your wife.”

May you like

Thomas paused, looking around the room before fixing his icy gaze back onto Richard’s trembling face.

“She is my only daughter.”
