Chapter 5 - The Collapse of Richard Vale

The silence in the ballroom broke into an explosion of murmurs, gasps, and frantic whispers.
“His daughter?!” someone near the stage whispered loudly. “Evelyn Hart is Thomas Mercer’s daughter?!”
Richard stared at me as if I had suddenly transformed into a stranger. His mouth opened and closed, no sound coming out.
“You... you’re a Mercer?” Richard choked out, looking from my calm, regal face to the towering figure of my father. “You never... you never told me.”
“You never asked, Richard,” I said, my voice echoing clearly through the silent hall. “You were too busy explaining my own finance committee duties to me.”
Cassandra Moore tried to step backward into the crowd, attempting to disappear behind a group of investors, but Victoria Chen stepped smoothly into her path accompanied by two uniformed police officers.
Richard’s face twisted from shock to desperate rage. He took a step toward me.
“Evelyn, this is ridiculous! You’re embarrassing us in front of the entire industry! Whatever personal issues we have can be discussed at home!”
“She has no home with you, Mr. Vale,” Thomas Mercer interrupted, stepping directly between Richard and me, his height towering over my husband. “And as of eight o’clock tonight, you no longer have a company.”
Richard blinked, horror dawning on his face. “What are you talking about?”
My father pulled a folded document from his tuxedo pocket and handed it to the head of the Hawthorne investment group, who was standing nearby.
“Fifteen minutes ago,” Thomas announced to the room, “Mercer Global executed its option to buy eighty percent of Veil Urban’s primary debt from its institutional lenders. As the majority debt holder, I have called an emergency acceleration of all outstanding loans due to structural fraud and breach of fiduciary duty.”
Richard gasped, stumbling back against a decorative pillar. “Fraud?! That’s a lie!”
“It’s not a lie, Richard,” I said, stepping up beside my father. I pulled a small flash drive from my purse and held it out to the federal prosecutors who were standing near the entrance with Victoria. “This drive contains six years of double-entry ledgers, showing thirty-five million dollars diverted to offshore accounts registered under your name and Cassandra Moore’s.”
Cassandra let out a shrill scream as the two police officers stepped up behind her, snapping silver handcuffs around her manicured wrists.
“Richard! Do something!” Cassandra sobbed, struggling against the officers. “He told me it was legal! He told me his wife was stupid and wouldn't notice!”
“Shut up, Cassandra!” Richard yelled, his composure completely collapsing into frantic panic.
He turned back to me, dropping to his knees on the marble floor right in front of my navy dress, reaching out to grab the hem of my gown.
“Evelyn! Please!” Richard begged, tears streaming down his flushed face. “I was wrong! I was confused! The stress of the expansion made me crazy! I love you! Think about our son!”
I stepped back, pulling my gown away from his grasp. I looked down at him without hatred, without anger, but with a cold, absolute clarity that felt like freedom.
“My son will know who his mother is,” I said softly. “And he will know that she never let anyone strike her twice.”
Victoria Chen stepped forward, handing Richard a thick legal packet.
“You’ve been formally served, Mr. Vale,” Victoria said calmly. “Emergency divorce proceedings, full restraining order, and a freeze on all personal assets. The police are waiting outside.”
