Chapter 2 - The Tactical Reconnaissance

“Report, Captain,” I commanded into the receiver, my voice cold and calm.

“The raw footage from 21:00 hours tells the whole story, ma'am,” David reported, the faint sound of computer key-clicks rapid in the background. “It shows Ethan Prescott physically striking Emily three times in the main courtyard, dragging her by her arm into the detached guest house, and locking the deadbolt from the outside. It also captures Brandon Prescott confiscating her mobile device and throwing her purse into the estate fountain.”

I kept my eyes locked onto Ethan’s face. His smirk was beginning to crumble under the weight of my unyielding gaze.

“Is the video file secured on off-site redundancy servers?” I asked.

“Negative on just one server, Colonel—we’ve mirrored the unedited video files across three independent military-encrypted cloud domains,” David replied. “In addition, while extracting the camera feeds, my automated sweep flagged a hidden, hidden partition on Richard Prescott’s private network server.”

Richard Prescott was Margaret’s husband—a powerful real estate developer whose firm held massive state infrastructure contracts across the East Coast.

“What kind of partition?” I asked.

“Offshore banking ledgers, shell company transactions, and direct wire transfers to several key judicial and municipal officials in the county,” David revealed. “They aren't just abusive, Colonel. They're running a multi-million-dollar money laundering and bribery ring through their commercial holdings.”

“Understood,” I said. “Initiate Phase One immediately. Secure all physical backups and prepare the tactical package.”

“Copy that, Colonel. Phase One is active.”

I ended the call, slipped the phone back into my dress jacket, and took a step toward Margaret Prescott.

Margaret took an involuntary half-step back, her eyes narrowing in irritation. “Who was that? What game are you playing, Colonel?”

“You told me three things when you walked into this room, Mrs. Prescott,” I said softly, my voice echoing off the sterile walls of the observation room. “First, you said my rank means nothing outside the base. Second, you said nobody touched my daughter. And third, you warned me about your political connections.”

Ethan shifted his weight nervously, his eyes darting toward the door. “Mom, let's just go. We don't have to listen to this—”

“You are going to listen to every single word I say,” I cut him off, my voice dropping into a register that had commanded battalion formations in combat zones.

Brandon took a step forward, his chest puffing out. “Hey! Don't you speak to my mother like that—”

I turned my head and fixed Brandon with a glare so cold, so lethal, that the young executive froze mid-sentence, his mouth remaining open as his instincts signaled immediate physical danger.

“Your family believes that wealth and localized political influence grant you immunity,” I continued, stepping between them and the door, cutting off their easy exit. “You believe that because you control local municipal contracts, you can beat a young woman, lock her away like a prisoner, and intimidate her family into silence.”

“She signed a prenuptial agreement!” Margaret snapped, attempting to regain control of the room. “She signed non-disclosure agreements regarding our family’s private affairs when she married Ethan! Anything she says will be shredded by our legal team in an hour!”

“A non-disclosure agreement,” I smiled faintly, a terrifying, dry expression, “does not cover felony domestic abuse, false imprisonment, or federal wire fraud.”

Ethan’s face went pale. “What are you talking about?”

“I am talking about the four separate camera angles currently saved on my server showing you assaulting my daughter in your courtyard,” I said flatly. “And I am talking about the offshore ledger files currently sitting on a federal server that detail how your father pays off local officials to ignore safety violations on his construction sites.”

Margaret’s hand flew to her pearl necklace, her eyes widening in genuine, icy shock. “Where did you get that... that's impossible! Our network is protected by enterprise security!”

“Your security system was designed by civilians,” I replied coldly. “My team spent twenty years dismantling state-sponsored military networks. You are way out of your depth, Mrs. Prescott.”

Dr. Jonathan Mercer, the hospital’s chief attending physician, entered the room accompanied by two uniformed hospital security officers. He held a thick clipboard and looked furious.

“Colonel Hart?” Dr. Mercer asked.

“Yes, Doctor.”

“We’ve completed Emily’s full forensic examination,” Dr. Mercer announced loudly, intentionally looking at Ethan and Margaret. “The medical report logs clear evidence of blunt force trauma, severe contusions on both arms consistent with forcible restraint, a split lip requiring sutures, and clear defensive injuries. The forensic nurse has logged every injury for the official police report.”

“You have no right to file a report without our consent!” Margaret demanded, turning on the doctor. “Do you know who sits on the board of directors for this hospital system? Richard Prescott!”

Dr. Mercer looked at Margaret with utter disgust. “Your husband’s position on the board doesn't override state law or medical ethics, ma'am. The Charlotte Police Department has already been dispatched. In fact, they should be arriving at the front desk right now.”

Brandon grabbed Ethan’s arm. “We're leaving. Now.”

“You can run back to your estate, Brandon,” I said as they backed out into the hallway. “Inspect your locks. Check your bank accounts. Look out your front windows. Because starting tonight, every single weapon your family has ever used to destroy people will be turned directly against you.”

Ethan stared at me, his lip trembling slightly, the arrogant smirk completely erased from his face. Without another word, he turned and fled down the hallway alongside his mother and brother, their expensive leather shoes squeaking frantically against the polished linoleum floor.

I turned back to Emily, taking her bruised hands in mine. “It’s over, baby. You’re coming home.”
