Chapter 4 - The Fall of the House of Prescott

The following morning, the Charlotte County Courthouse was surrounded by dozens of news crews, satellite trucks, and hundreds of curious onlookers.

The story had exploded nationwide. What the Prescotts had tried to bury as a minor domestic incident had become the primary national news story: Powerful Billionaire Real Estate Empire Collapses Amid Domestic Violence and Federal Corruption Charges.

Inside Courtroom 3B, the atmosphere was thick with tension.

I sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing my sharpest dress uniform, sitting beside Emily. My daughter was dressed in a simple, elegant navy blue dress. She held her head high, her eye swelling reduced, her posture reflecting the quiet, unshakeable strength she had reclaimed over the past forty-eight hours.

At the defense table sat Ethan and Brandon Prescott, both wearing orange inmate jumpsuits, their hands and ankles restrained by heavy steel chains.

Beside them sat Margaret Prescott, looking frail, her expensive clothes wrinkled, her face pale as she stared blankly at the polished mahogany table. Richard Prescott sat at the far end of the table alongside three public defense attorneys—their expensive private legal firm had officially withdrawn from the case three hours earlier when their retainer checks bounced due to the federal asset freeze.

Judge Katherine Bowman, a sharp, no-nonsense veteran jurist known for her ruthless stance on public corruption, presided over the bench.

“We are here for the preliminary hearing and bail review in the matter of the State versus Ethan Prescott, Brandon Prescott, and Richard Prescott,” Judge Bowman announced, her voice echoing clearly off the high plaster ceilings.

The Assistant District Attorney, working directly alongside Captain Vance’s legal intelligence team, stood up from the prosecution table.

“Your Honor,” the prosecutor spoke, holding up a sleek digital thumb drive. “We submit into evidence the fully authenticated, high-definition digital surveillance recordings recovered from the Prescott estate. This footage shows the defendant, Ethan Prescott, executing a premeditated, violent physical assault against his wife, Emily Hart-Prescott, before locking her in an unheated structure.”

The prosecutor clicked a remote control.

Two large flat-screen monitors mounted on the courtroom walls flickered to life. The entire courtroom watched in dead, stunned silence as the high-definition video played: Ethan striking Emily across the face, shoving her violently to the pavement, dragging her across the courtyard, and locking the heavy door while Brandon threw her phone into the fountain.

In the gallery, several journalists let out sharp gasps of disgust.

Ethan kept his head down, staring at his handcuffed wrists, weeping silently in shame.

“In addition, Your Honor,” the prosecutor continued, pulling a thick stack of documents from his briefcase, “the State submits the grand jury indictments returned forty-five minutes ago by the Federal District Court. These charges include twelve counts of Federal Wire Fraud, Money Laundering, Obstruction of Justice, and Witness Intimidation against Richard and Margaret Prescott.”

Margaret let out a sharp, choked sob, burying her face in her hands.

Judge Bowman looked down from the bench, her eyes burning with pure, unadulterated cold fury as she looked at the three men sitting in chains before her.

“Mr. Ethan Prescott,” Judge Bowman spoke, her voice dropping into an icy register. “The evidence submitted by the prosecution shows a terrifying pattern of depraved cruelty, physical violence, and absolute contempt for human life and the law.”

She slammed her gavel down with a sharp, thunderous CRACK!

“Bail for Ethan Prescott is officially denied. You will remain in county custody pending trial.”

Ethan began to sob aloud, his shoulders shaking as the court bailiffs stepped up behind his chair.

“Regarding Brandon Prescott,” Judge Bowman continued, “for your role as an active accomplice in the false imprisonment and destruction of evidence, bail is set at one million dollars cash. Regarding Richard Prescott, in light of the severe federal RICO indictments, you are ordered to surrender all travel documents immediately, with bail set at five million dollars.”

Richard slumped backward in his chair, his hands trembling violently. The wealth, the connections, the high-society status he had spent forty years building had vanished completely in less than forty-eight hours.

As the court bailiffs moved in to lead Ethan and Brandon away through the rear prisoner door, Ethan turned his head toward the gallery, looking directly at Emily with eyes full of desperate, pathetic pleading.

“Emily... please!” Ethan cried out, his voice echoing pathetically off the high walls. “Tell them to stop! I'm sorry! I love you! Please talk to your mother!”

Emily didn't flinch. She didn't cry. She didn't look down.

She looked her abusive husband dead in the eye, her face completely calm, her hand resting securely in mine.

“You told me your family owned everything, Ethan,” Emily said, her voice clear, strong, and loud enough for every reporter in the room to hear. “But you forgot that my mother commands people who protect the innocent.”

Without another word, Emily turned her back on him completely as the heavy metal doors slammed shut behind the disgraced Prescott family.
