Chapter 3 - The Envelope

The police arrived the next morning.

Claire and Victor had already contacted attorneys.

That told me more than their explanations ever could.

I gave my statement.

Eli gave his.

The warehouse was examined.

The security camera had captured more than anyone expected.

Claire.

Victor.

My wheelchair.

The chain.

Their vehicle.

The footage was clear.

Too clear.

Victor claimed they had brought me there because I wanted privacy.

Claire claimed I had insisted.

Neither could explain why the door had been chained.

Neither could explain why my medicine bag had been thrown beneath the loading dock.

The investigation began.

And while my children fought to protect themselves, I asked Eli to bring me a black leather folder from the hospital safe.

He returned an hour later.

“What is this?”

“Open it.”

Inside was a sealed envelope.

Eli stared.

“Mom?”

“Open it.”

He carefully broke the seal.

Then stopped.

“What?”

I smiled.

“Read.”

His eyes moved across the document.

Then back to me.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

His mouth opened.

Closed.

Then opened again.

“You won?”

“One hundred million dollars.”

Eli sat down.

Hard.

I laughed.

“Mom.”

“Careful. I’m injured. Don’t make me laugh.”

He stared at the lottery documentation.

“You’re serious.”

“Yes.”

“And Claire and Victor don’t know?”

“No.”

“Does anyone?”

“My attorney.”

“And now me.”

He placed the papers back into the folder.

“I don’t want it.”

I studied him.

“You don’t even know what I’m offering.”

“I don’t care.”

That was the moment I knew I had made the right decision.

Not about the lottery.

About trusting him.

I reached toward the bedside table.

Another folder sat there.

This one contained the trust documents.

“Everything I built before the lottery is protected.”

Eli listened.

“The trust has three beneficiaries.”

He frowned.

“Claire, Victor, and me?”

“No.”

His eyes widened.

“Mom.”

“I gave them opportunities.”

He said nothing.

“I gave Victor a position in my company. He stole.”

I continued.

“I paid Claire’s debts. She forged my name.”

My voice remained calm.

“And when I became dependent on them, they tried to abandon me.”

Eli looked down.

“What happens now?”

I smiled.

May you like

“Now we see what they do when they realize I am not broke.”
