Chapter 2 - The Security Footage

The police officers accepted my offer immediately. Officer Elliott pulled out a department tablet, and I logged into my encrypted cloud security account with trembling fingers. The app loaded slowly, the blue spinner revolving on the screen as the tension in the hospital room grew thick enough to choke on. Brandon stood over my shoulder, breathing heavily, while Evelyn leaned against the wall, her hands now shaking violently.

"When did the doctor say the magnets were ingested?" Officer Elliott asked, leaning in close.

"Over the past twenty-four to thirty-six hours," I replied, my voice remarkably steady despite the adrenaline coursing through my veins. "That means yesterday afternoon between noon and six PM."

I scrolled through the automated motion-capture clips logged from the previous day. The dining room camera covered the main table, the entryway to the kitchen, and the stairs leading up to Nancy’s bedroom.

The first clip from 2:15 PM showed Nancy sitting at the wooden table, drawing with colored pencils. The peaceful image made my heart ache. But then, a figure entered the frame.

It wasn't me. I had been in the basement garage at that time, organizing inventory boxes for my online store.

The person walking into the dining room was Evelyn.

Brandon gasped softly beside me. "Mom? You said you only dropped by for five minutes yesterday to drop off some groceries."

"I... I did!" Evelyn stammered, her voice rising an octave, shrill and panicked. "I just went in to give her a kiss! What does this prove? It proves nothing! I am her grandmother!"

"Quiet, ma'am," Officer Elliott commanded sharply, keeping his eyes glued to the screen. "Play the clip, Mrs. Vance."

I hit play.

The high-definition camera captured every single detail with brutal clarity. Evelyn walked over to Nancy with a pleasant, overly sweet smile on her face. From her designer handbag, she pulled out a small, metallic tin. She opened it and tipped out several tiny, silver spheres that gleamed under the dining room chandelier light.

On the video recording, Evelyn leaned down and whispered into Nancy's ear. Though there was no audio on this specific camera model, her hand gestures were unmistakable. She picked up a silver sphere, placed it near Nancy’s lips, and handed her a glass of orange juice from the table. Nancy hesitated, shaking her small head. Evelyn then pinched Nancy's cheeks gently—a gesture that looked affectionate from afar, but forced the child's mouth open—and dropped the small metal ball inside, encouraging her to swallow it down with juice.

Nancy swallowed, wincing slightly. Evelyn smiled warmly, patted her head, and repeated the process. One. Two. Three. Four. She praised the child, clapping her hands silently, feeding her the metallic spheres like small pills disguised as a special treat.

"My God..." Officer Peters breathed, his hand instinctively dropping to the holster on his belt as he stared at the screen.

Brandon stepped back from his mother as if she had suddenly caught fire. "Mom... what... what are you doing in that video? What did you give her?!"

Evelyn’s face turned as white as a sheet. She clutched her chest, her eyes darting frantically toward the door of the hospital room. "It’s a frame-up! That video is fake! She used artificial intelligence! Samantha edited that to ruin me! You know how she hates me, Brandon! She’s trying to destroy our family!"

"Ma'am, that is live cloud footage recorded on an encrypted server," Officer Elliott said sternly. He turned to Officer Peters. "Call for backup and request a unit to secure the Vance home immediately. We need that metal tin as physical evidence."

"No! Wait!" Evelyn shrieked, breaking down into hysterical sobs. "I didn't mean to hurt her! I didn't know they were dangerous! I thought... I thought they were just magnetic beads!"

"Why would you feed magnetic beads to a five-year-old child?!" I screamed, the rage finally breaking through my shock. I marched right up to her, inches from her face, my fingers clenched into tight fists. "Why would you do that to my daughter, Evelyn?! Answer me!"

Evelyn shrank back against the wall, weeping uncontrollably, but she refused to speak another word. She squeezed her eyes shut and kept repeating, "I want my lawyer. I’m not saying anything else without my lawyer."

Officer Elliott didn't waste another second. He pulled Evelyn’s hands behind her back, the metallic click of handcuffs echoing sharply off the tiled hospital walls. "Evelyn Vance, you are under arrest for aggravated child abuse, assault with a deadly weapon, and poisoning a minor. You have the right to remain silent..."

As they read her rights, Brandon stood motionless, staring at his mother in absolute disbelief. The man who had spent the last three years dismissing my concerns about his mother's overbearing and manipulative behavior was now watching her being marched down the hallway in handcuffs.

He turned back toward me, his hands shaking, his lips trembling as he reached out to touch my arm. "Samantha... baby... I'm so sorry. I didn't know... I thought..."

I pulled my arm away before his skin could even graze mine. The coldness in my eyes made him freeze in his tracks.

"Don't touch me, Brandon," I said, my voice dropping to a icy whisper. "And don't ever call me 'baby' again. You chose her over your own daughter the second things went wrong. You blamed me before you even asked if Nancy was alive."

"Samantha, please! She's my mother, I was just shocked!" he pleaded, tears streaming down his face. "We can fix this. We need to stick together for Nancy!"

"There is no 'we' anymore," I said coldly. "Get out of my sight before I ask the police to remove you too."

Before Brandon could answer, my phone buzzed in my hand. It was an incoming text notification from an unknown number, accompanied by an attachment. I opened it mechanically.

It was a bank transaction receipt forwarded to my email, along with a brief text message that read: Check your husband's private bank accounts before you trust anything he says.

I looked up from my phone screen and stared at Brandon. The nightmare wasn't over. It was only just beginning.
