Chapter 4 - Confrontation at the Hospital

Less than two hours later, the heavy double doors of the pediatric ICU floor swung open. Brandon rushed down the hallway, looking frantic, his hair unkempt and his jacket wrinkled. He didn't know that the police were already waiting inside the doctor's office down the hall, monitoring the security feeds. He had been tracked down by the officers at the hotel, but not arrested yet—they wanted to see what he would do when confronted.

"Samantha!" Brandon gasped, bursting into Nancy’s private room. He tried to project the image of a worried, loving father, but his eyes were darting nervously around the room, taking in the medical apparatus and my cold, unreadable expression. "I came as fast as I could! The police called me... they said my mother was arrested! Samantha, this is all a huge misunderstanding! My mother is old, she's losing her mind, she must have confused those magnets with Nancy's vitamin candies!"

I sat back in my chair, folding my arms across my chest, staring at him with absolute disdain.

"Is that right, Brandon?" I said quietly. "She confused thirty-six industrial neodymium magnets with gummy vitamins? One by one? For thirty-six hours?"

"She's sick, Samantha! She has dementia or something!" he argued desperately, stepping closer to the bed. "We can't let her destroy our family! I’ve spoken to a lawyer. We need to drop the charges, tell the police it was a household accident, and focus on getting Nancy the best medical care possible. In fact, I've already filed the initial paperwork with our supplemental medical insurance to cover the costs..."

"Which insurance policy, Brandon?" I asked softly, tilting my head. "The standard family health insurance... or the $1.5 million critical illness policy you secretly opened three months ago?"

Brandon froze instantly. The color drained completely from his face, leaving him looking like a ghost. His lips parted, but no sound came out.

"Or maybe," I continued, taking out my tablet and turning the screen toward him, "we should talk about the $250,000 you wired to the Cayman Islands three days ago to cover the money you stole from your firm's escrow accounts?"

"Where... how did you get that?" he whispered, taking a step backward, his eyes wide with horror.

"You left your digital footprint everywhere, Brandon," I said, my voice dripping with cold fury. "You and your mother thought you were so brilliant. You thought you could destroy my life, put me in prison for child abuse, crippling our five-year-old daughter just so you could harvest a $1.5 million payout to cover your financial crimes!"

"No! That's not... Samantha, listen to me!" Brandon panicked, reaching out to grab my shoulders. "I did it for us! I was under so much pressure! My mother was going to go to jail! They were going to ruin us!"

"You sacrificed our child!" I screamed, standing up and slamming my hands onto the bedside table. "You fed metal to a baby! You let her suffer for days while her organs were being torn apart from the inside!"

"She survived, didn't she?!" Brandon blurted out in a moment of sheer, unmasked selfishness, his true nature breaking through his panicked façade. "She's fine! The doctor said she's going to recover! If you just sign the legal consent forms declaring you weren't supervising her, the insurance company will pay out within forty-eight hours! We can pay off the debt, keep my mother out of state prison, and start over!"

"She's fine?" I repeated, my voice shaking with disgust. "She lost part of her small intestine, Brandon. She almost died of septic shock at two in the morning while you were sitting in a luxury suite at the Grand Hyatt with your mother, waiting for her to go into total failure!"

"You don't understand how real life works, Samantha!" Brandon yelled, stepping toward me aggressively, dropping all pretense of guilt. "If I go to prison, you have nothing! You're just a stay-at-home mother with a silly little craft business! You can't support her! You need my money! You sign those papers, or I will make sure every lawyer in this city turns the blame back on you!"

"She won't need to sign anything, Mr. Vance," a stern voice echoed from the doorway.

Officer Elliott and Officer Peters stepped into the room, flanked by two plainclothes detectives from the financial crimes unit.

Officer Elliott held up an arrest warrant. "Brandon Vance, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit attempted murder, severe child endangerment, insurance fraud, and grand larceny."

Brandon’s mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water. "Wait! No! You don't understand! My wife is lying! She set this up!"

"We've been recording this entire conversation through the room's clinical audio monitor with Mrs. Vance's consent, sir," Detective Miller said, stepping forward with handcuffs in hand. "We also have full access to your desktop computer and the email records regarding 'Project Legacy.' You have the right to remain silent."

As the officers pinned Brandon against the wall and snapped the heavy metal cuffs around his wrists, he turned his head toward me, pleading with tear-filled eyes. "Samantha, please! Don't do this! I'm her father! Nancy needs her father!"

I walked over to the bed, took Nancy’s small, fragile hand in mine, and looked at him one last time.

"Nancy doesn't have a father anymore," I said softly. "She only has a mother who will protect her from monsters like you."
