Chapter 2: The Folder He Could Never Erase

Dominic's hand closed around the blue folder so quickly that, for one stunned heartbeat, nobody in the room reacted.

The nurse gasped.

Charlotte instinctively stepped backward, her wedding skirt brushing against the hospital recliner.

I tightened my arms around my daughter, protecting her against my chest as Dominic yanked the folder from the bedside table.

His face no longer resembled the polished executive who had smiled for wedding photographs only two hours earlier.

It was the face of a desperate man.

"Give that back," I said quietly.

He didn't answer.

He flipped the folder open with shaking hands, scanning page after page. I watched the color drain from his face.

The first document was a copy of an internal accounting report.

The second contained emails between Dominic and Charlotte's father.

The third was a notarized timeline I had prepared months earlier.

By the fourth page, sweat had appeared along Dominic's forehead.

Charlotte noticed.

"What is that?" she asked.

He slammed the folder shut.

"Nothing."

She frowned.

"You just turned white."

"It's confidential."

"My husband doesn't usually panic over confidential paperwork."

Before he could answer, two hospital security officers hurried into the room, followed by the charge nurse.

"Sir," one officer said firmly, "we've been informed you're attempting to pressure a patient into signing legal documents."

Dominic forced a smile.

"This is a misunderstanding."

"No," I answered.

"It isn't."

Every eye turned toward me.

"He entered my recovery room less than an hour after I gave birth. He demanded that I sign legal papers while I was still attached to monitoring equipment."

The older security officer extended his hand.

"Sir, I'll need you to hand over the folder."

Dominic held it tighter.

"It's company property."

"No," I replied.

"It's my evidence."

The silence that followed seemed to stretch forever.

Charlotte looked from him to me.

"Evidence?"

I nodded.

"The documents concern financial fraud."

Dominic laughed, but the sound came out strained.

"Evelyn has always enjoyed dramatic stories."

I smiled faintly.

"And you've always underestimated documentation."

The officer repeated himself.

"Sir. The folder."

For several long seconds, Dominic refused to move.

Then, realizing every second of resistance made him appear guiltier, he reluctantly handed it over.

The officer passed it directly to me.

I slid it beneath my blanket beside my daughter.

Some things belonged exactly where they could not be stolen.

Charlotte stared at Dominic.

"What fraud is she talking about?"

He answered too quickly.

"Nothing."

She folded her arms.

"You told me your divorce was simple."

"It was."

"You told me there were no secrets."

"There aren't."

I couldn't stop myself.

"There are quite a few."

His eyes flashed toward me.

"Evelyn."

"Should I start with the offshore companies?"

Charlotte blinked.

"What offshore companies?"

Dominic's jaw tightened.

"Don't."

"Or perhaps the renovation invoices?"

Charlotte slowly turned toward him.

"What invoices?"

He looked furious.

"You have no idea what you're talking about."

I almost laughed.

"I spent seven years reviewing every financial report before you presented them to investors."

His confidence cracked.

Only for a moment.

But I saw it.

So did Charlotte.

...

The nurse interrupted.

"Mrs. Hayes needs rest."

Dominic ignored her.

"Evelyn, this isn't the place."

"Neither was my delivery room."

He took one slow breath, forcing himself back into the calm businessman everyone admired.

"Let's discuss this privately."

"No."

"You'll regret making this public."

"I've regretted staying silent much longer."

Charlotte stepped closer.

"Dominic."

He didn't answer.

She repeated his name.

Louder this time.

"What invoices?"

He finally looked at her.

"They're routine business expenses."

I shook my head.

"They're fake."

Charlotte frowned.

"What?"

"The invoices paid contractors who never existed."

She stared.

I continued.

"The payments moved through shell companies before ending up in overseas accounts."

Dominic pointed toward me.

"She's lying."

"I wish I were."

Charlotte looked genuinely confused now.

"My father reviewed every investment."

"Your father created half of them."

The room froze.

Even the heart monitor seemed louder.

Charlotte whispered,

"You're talking about my father."

"Yes."

"My father would never—"

"He signed the authorization himself."

Dominic stepped between us.

"Enough."

"No."

His voice became colder.

"You don't know who you're hurting."

I looked directly into his eyes.

"You never asked that question while hurting me."

...

One of the officers cleared his throat.

"Sir, your visit is over."

Dominic refused to move.

Instead, he stared at the tiny bundle sleeping peacefully in my arms.

"Our daughter."

I corrected him.

"My daughter."

His face hardened.

"You can't erase me."

"I don't have to."

"What does that mean?"

"It means you've already erased yourself."

Charlotte looked down at the baby.

"You never told me she existed."

Dominic remained silent.

"You said the divorce happened because you and Evelyn wanted different futures."

Still silence.

"You promised there were no children."

Silence again.

Her breathing became uneven.

"Were you ever going to tell me?"

Finally he answered.

"It would only complicate things."

Charlotte laughed once.

A broken sound.

"So that's what your daughter is?"

He looked away.

"A complication?"

The word echoed around the room.

The same word he had used only minutes earlier.

Charlotte slowly removed her wedding ring.

The diamond caught the fluorescent lights.

She looked at it for several seconds.

Then she slipped it into his jacket pocket.

"I've been your wife for exactly two hours."

He reached for her.

"Charlotte."

She stepped back.

"No."

"You don't understand."

"I understand perfectly."

Her mascara had begun running again.

Not because of me.

Because the perfect marriage she had celebrated all afternoon was collapsing before sunset.

...

My phone buzzed.

A message from my attorney.

Outside your room. May I come in?

I smiled for the first time that day.

"Yes."

Seconds later, the door opened again.

Rebecca Lawson entered carrying a slim leather briefcase.

She had represented Fortune 500 executives, senators, and billion-dollar corporations.

She rarely looked surprised.

Today, however, she stopped after seeing Dominic in a tuxedo and Charlotte in a wedding gown.

"I assume," she said calmly, "I've interrupted something."

"Perfect timing," I replied.

Dominic's shoulders stiffened.

Rebecca looked directly at him.

"I was informed you attempted to obtain documents from my client."

"They belong to my company."

Rebecca smiled politely.

"No."

"They belong to discovery."

His expression changed instantly.

He knew exactly what that word meant.

Charlotte didn't.

"Discovery?"

Rebecca answered before Dominic could.

"The legal process through which courts obtain evidence."

Charlotte stared.

"Court?"

Rebecca nodded.

"My client instructed me several weeks ago to prepare for civil litigation."

Dominic looked at me.

"Weeks ago?"

I nodded.

"Long before labor started."

"You planned this?"

"I prepared."

"You've been building a case against me?"

"No."

"You built it yourself."

...

Rebecca opened her briefcase.

"I also have something for you."

Dominic frowned.

"What?"

She handed him a sealed envelope.

He opened it.

Inside was a lawsuit.

His breathing stopped.

"Fraud..."

He flipped another page.

"Breach of fiduciary duty..."

Another.

"Forgery..."

Another.

"Civil conspiracy..."

Charlotte whispered,

"What is this?"

Rebecca answered evenly.

"This is the beginning."

Dominic looked up.

"You waited until today?"

I looked down at my daughter sleeping peacefully against my chest.

"No."

"I waited until I was no longer afraid."

At that exact moment, another knock sounded at the hospital door.

Not security.

Not hospital staff.

Three men wearing dark federal jackets stepped inside.

One displayed an identification badge.

"Mr. Dominic Hayes?"

Dominic slowly turned.

"Yes?"

"We're with the Financial Crimes Task Force."

The room became perfectly still.

The agent continued.

"We'd like to ask you several questions regarding multiple international wire transfers."

Charlotte's face went completely white.

Dominic whispered only two words.

"Who called?"

The lead investigator looked toward me.

Then toward Attorney Rebecca Lawson.

Finally he smiled slightly.

"You'll have plenty of time to discuss that."

And for the first time since our divorce...

May you like

I watched Dominic realize that losing me had never been the greatest mistake of his life.

Walking into my hospital room today had been.
