Chapter 6: The Anonymous Witness

The envelope contained only two items.
A black flash drive.
And a handwritten note.
Someone inside the company is still deleting evidence.
Olivia stared at the words for several seconds.
There was no signature.
No fingerprints.
Nothing that could identify the sender.
Her assistant looked uneasy.
"Should I call security?"
Olivia slipped the drive into her pocket.
"Not yet."
"If someone risked sending this, they wanted it to reach me before anyone else."
...
An hour later, the lights in the executive floor had gone dark.
Most employees had already gone home.
Only the soft glow from Olivia's office remained.
Rebecca arrived carrying two cups of coffee.
"You sounded concerned."
Olivia placed the flash drive on the desk.
"It was delivered anonymously."
Rebecca frowned.
"Did you open it?"
"Not on the company network."
She connected it to an isolated laptop used by the legal team.
A single folder appeared.
Internal Audit – Deleted Files
Inside were dozens of recovered emails.
Some were incomplete.
Others had clearly been erased and later restored.
One message caught Rebecca's attention immediately.
"Remove the original approvals before the auditors arrive."
No sender.
No recipient.
Only a timestamp from nearly three years earlier.
Rebecca looked up.
"This changes everything."
...
The next file was even more alarming.
A spreadsheet listed confidential projects that had never appeared in the company's official books.
Beside each project was a single letter.
A.
B.
C.
D.
And beside one entry—
Project Atlas
Amount transferred:
$18,400,000
Destination:
Unknown
Olivia slowly closed the laptop.
"Someone built a second accounting system."
Rebecca nodded.
"And someone inside the company helped hide it."
...
The following morning, Olivia assembled only four people.
Not the entire executive team.
Not the board.
Only those she trusted completely.
"We tell no one about the flash drive," she said.
"If the sender is telling the truth, the person destroying evidence may still be watching us."
The room agreed.
From that moment forward, every meeting would be recorded.
Every financial record duplicated.
Every access log preserved.
If someone tried to erase the truth again...
They would leave a trail.
...
Elsewhere in the city, an unidentified man watched the morning news from inside a parked car.
The television showed Olivia speaking confidently to reporters.
He switched it off.
"So..."
He murmured.
"You received my message."
He reached into the glove compartment and removed another sealed envelope.
This one contained a photograph.
Five executives standing together at a charity gala years earlier.
One face had been circled in red ink.
The person smiling at the camera wasn't under investigation.
Not yet.
But they were about to become the most important witness in the entire case.

The man started the engine.
"It won't be long now."
