Chapter 4 - The Digital Execution

Ten minutes later, the heavy mahogany double doors of the ballroom opened, and Maya returned. She was not accompanied by Mr. Briggs, the head of security. Instead, she walked alone, carrying a sleek, custom-encrypted carbon-fiber tablet that belonged exclusively to Julian’s private security network. She bypassed the waiters, walked straight through the crowd of elite guests who were now actively ignoring Julian, and placed the device directly into his hands.
As her fingers brushed against his, she slipped a small, folded piece of paper beneath the edge of the tablet.
Julian kept his expression blank as he activated the screen using a biometric retinal scan hidden within the front-facing camera. The device hummed to life, its display showing a series of live, encrypted data feeds originating from the corporate servers of Vance International. He looked down at the paper Maya had slipped him. Written in an elegant, precise architectural hand were four short lines of text:
Marcus Thorne accessed the logistics server at 8:14 PM tonight from the estate’s guest Wi-Fi. File identity: Project Ragnarok. The transfer went to a shell company registered in the Cayman Islands under Eleanor Sterling’s maiden name. They are signing the documents tonight in the library.
Julian’s heart rate didn't even elevate. He had built his entire empire on the principle that information was the only true currency on earth. He had known Marcus was a snake for three years; he had simply kept him close because a known traitor was easier to manage than an unknown competitor. But to find out that Maya—a woman hired to clean his floors—had the technical capability to track an encrypted server transfer from a guest network was a revelation that changed the entire geometry of the board.
He tapped three icons on his tablet, entering a master administrative bypass code that he had spent five years hiding within the core architecture of Vance International’s global infrastructure. It was the "Black Box" protocol—a legal and digital kill-switch designed to be used only in the event of a hostile foreign takeover or a total corporate compromise.
With three taps of his thumb, Julian executed a total, irreversible freeze on every corporate asset, bank account, and stock option held by Marcus Thorne and the Sterling family trust. He didn't just freeze them; he initiated a retroactive audit under the federal anti-fraud statutes, automatically transmitting twenty-four months of pre-compiled evidence regarding Marcus’s insider trading to the Securities and Exchange Commission’s priority investigation portal.
He looked up from the screen.

Across the ballroom, near the entrance to the long gallery that led to the estate library, Marcus Thorne was leaning against a marble pillar, his phone pressed tightly to his ear. Julian watched as Marcus’s face suddenly drained of all color. The smug, satisfied smirk that had occupied his features all evening vanished, replaced by a look of sheer, unadulterated panic. Marcus stumbled backward slightly, nearly knocking over a tray of champagne flutes held by a passing waiter, as his phone began to vibrate with an incoming wave of emergency alerts from his personal financial advisors.
Victoria noticed her co-conspirator’s sudden distress. She frowned, turning her head toward Marcus, her brow furrowing. “Marcus? What is wrong with you? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”
