Chapter 5 - The King Reclaimed

Marcus didn't answer her. He didn't even look at her. He dropped his phone onto the floor, the glass screen shattering against the marble, and began to run toward the front exit of the ballroom, his expensive leather dress shoes slipping on the polished surface as he fled from the digital execution that had just erased his entire net worth in less than sixty seconds.
The ballroom fell into a sudden, confused silence. The elite guests stopped talking, their attention drawn to the spectacle of the company’s Chief Operating Officer sprinting out of the estate like a common thief.
Victoria turned back to Julian, her voice rising in a pitch of frantic irritation. “Julian, what is the meaning of this? What did you do to Marcus? Why is he running?”
Julian did not answer her with his voice.
Slowly, methodically, he reached down to his lap and threw the heavy, charcoal-grey cashmere blanket aside, letting it drop to the floor in a heap of fabric. He placed both of his palms flat on the armrests of the titanium wheelchair.
Then, in front of sixty of the most powerful people in the country, the man who had supposedly severed his spine three weeks ago stood up.
He didn't stumble. He didn't shake. He rose to his full height of six-foot-two, his posture perfectly straight, his tailored tuxedo fitting his broad shoulders flawlessly. The silence that fell over the Vance Estate’s grand ballroom was absolute—a heavy, suffocating quiet where the only sound was the crackle of the wax candles burning in the chandeliers above.
Victoria stumbled backward, her silver dress rustling violently, her hand flying to her mouth as her eyes dilated with a pure, animal terror. “Julian... your legs... the doctors said... the hospital records said you were paralyzed...”
“The hospital records belong to me, Victoria,” Julian said, his voice no longer raspy or weak. It was a deep, resonant baritone that carried into every corner of the massive room, carrying the absolute authority of a man who owned the air everyone else was breathing. “The car crash was real. The attempt on my life was real. But the injury was a filter. And tonight, every single one of you poured yourselves into it.”
He stepped forward, his leather shoes making a solid, heavy sound against the marble—a sound that signaled the definitive end of an empire for the people in that room. He stopped three inches from Victoria, looking down into her pale, trembling face. He reached out his right hand, his fingers cool and steady, and grabbed the twelve-carat diamond ring on her left hand. With a single, smooth pull, he slid the ring off her finger, placing it casually into his tuxedo vest pocket.
“You have exactly ten minutes to leave my property, Victoria,” Julian said, his voice chillingly calm. “You, your mother, and your uncle Charles. Your personal bank accounts have been frozen under a federal asset protection order. Your family’s real estate holdings in New York are currently being repossessed by my banking syndicate for breach of contract on the commercial loans I personally guaranteed last year. You entered this room thinking you were inheriting a shattered crown. You are leaving it with absolutely nothing.”
He turned away from her, completely ignoring her sudden, desperate explosion of tears and pleas as security guards appeared from the shadows to escort the Sterling family out into the cold rain.
Julian looked across the room, his eyes finding Maya, who was still standing near the edge of the ballroom floor. She was the only person in the entire estate who wasn't looking at him with fear or frantic calculations of survival. She looked at him with that same calm, intelligent, and unyielding dignity.

Julian walked over to her, stopping in front of the young woman who had guarded his door in the dark. He offered her his arm, a genuine, warm smile finally breaking across his features.
“Come with me to the study, Maya,” Julian said, his voice dropping to a private, respectful tone. “I believe it’s time we rewrite the organizational chart for Vance International. And I need a new Chief Operating Officer who knows how to keep the kings alive.”
