Chapter 10 - The Real Alliance

Six months later, summer had returned to Chicago.
The sun was setting over Lake Michigan, painting the sky in brilliant hues of gold, crimson, and deep purple.
I stood on the private terrace of our penthouse, wearing a simple silk dress, holding a glass of chilled champagne.
The city below was quiet, peaceful, and entirely under our control.
The two-year contract we had signed in that hotel hallway was still sitting in my safe inside the study. But over the last six months, neither of us had mentioned the two-year deadline. Not once.
Heavy, familiar arms wrapped around my waist from behind. Nikolai pulled me back against his broad chest, resting his chin softly against my shoulder.
"You're thinking too loud, little bird," Nikolai murmured into my ear, his breath warm against my skin.
I smiled, leaning back into his embrace, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat against my shoulder.
"I was thinking about the contract," I admitted softly.
Nikolai went quiet for a second. He turned me around in his arms until I was facing him, his dark, handsome eyes searching mine in the fading twilight.
He reached into his suit jacket, pulled out a folded piece of paper, and held it between us.
It was our original two-year agreement—the document that detailed our marriage of convenience, asset distributions, and dissolution terms.
Without saying a word, Nikolai pulled a silver lighter from his pocket, flicked the flame, and touched it to the corner of the paper.
The fire caught instantly, hungrily consuming the ink, the clauses, and the dissolution dates until nothing remained but ash blowing away into the warm evening breeze off the lake.
"What did you do that for?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper, my heart pounding in my chest.
Nikolai reached up, gently cupping both sides of my face with his large, strong hands, his eyes shining with an intense, unshakeable devotion.
"I don't renegotiate contracts, Evelyn," Nikolai said softly, his voice rich and deep. "And I don't let my wife leave after two years. You're stuck with me forever."
I looked up into the eyes of the most feared man in Chicago—the man who had saved me from disgrace, who had given me a kingdom, and who had stood between me and the dark.
I reached up, wrapping my arms around his neck, pulling him down until our lips met in a deep, fiery kiss that tasted of sweet champagne and absolute possession.
May you like
"Good," I whispered against his lips, smiling into the warm night air. "Because I was never going to give you back anyway."
Below us, the lights of Chicago flickered to life, illumination the empire we had built together—not on convenience, not on fear, but on a love born from the shadows and forged in steel.
