Chapter 6 - The Council Of Seven

At 8:45 AM the following morning, Nikolai's black armored SUV pulled into the underground garage beneath an unmarked stone building in the Financial District.

The air inside the concrete basement was heavy, smelling of damp stone and cigar smoke.

Nikolai wore a bespoke charcoal three-piece suit, his dark hair brushed back impeccably. I stood beside him in a tailored white suit jacket, matching trousers, and high heels—looking every bit the corporate warlord ready for trial.

"Remember," Nikolai whispered as we stood outside the heavy iron doors of the chamber. "They will try to intimidate you. Don't look at their guns. Look at their eyes. Men in this room only respect strength."

"I grew up with Arthur Hart as a father and Serena as a sister, Nikolai," I replied coolly. "Intimidation is my native language."

Nikolai chuckled softly, knocking three times on the iron door.

The doors swung open.

The council chamber was a vaulted room lined with dark wood paneling. Seven old men sat around a horseshoe-shaped oak table, smoking cigars and sipping black coffee. Marco Moretti sat in the center seat as chairman.

Standing at the far end of the room was Julian, flanked by my father, Arthur Hart.

Julian looked exhausted, dark circles beneath his eyes, but his posture flared with desperate aggression as we entered.

"Father!" Julian called out, pointing an accusing finger at Nikolai. "This marriage is a farce! Nikolai manipulated Evelyn while she was in an emotionally unstable state on Friday night! She didn't marry him out of free will—she did it to get revenge on me!"

Marco Moretti leaned back in his leather chair, blowing a plume of grey smoke toward the ceiling. "Quiet, Julian." Marco looked at me, his sharp eyes narrowing. "Evelyn Moretti. Step forward."

I stepped into the center of the chamber, my heels clicking loudly against the marble floor. Nikolai remained two steps behind me, his arms folded, projecting absolute confidence in my ability to handle the room.

"Julian claims you were coerced," Marco said flatly. "He claims my eldest son took advantage of a family feud to steal the Hart estate assets. What say you?"

I looked at Julian, then at my father, before addressing the old men at the table.

"Gentlemen," I began, my voice clear and completely steady. "On Friday night, Julian Moretti arrived forty minutes late to our public engagement gala. He walked in holding my younger sister's hand, wearing my wedding dress, and carrying the ring I selected. He publicly announced that he preferred my sister."

A few of the older council members grunted in disapproval, shooting cold glares at Julian. In their old-school honor code, publicly humiliating a partner was considered poor form.

"Julian made a strategic error," I continued smoothly. "He assumed that because Serena is younger, she is the prize. He failed to realize that Serena holds zero voting shares in the Hart Family Foundation. I control seventy percent of the judicial, commercial, and political trusts established by my grandfather."

I pulled a crisp leather folder from my briefcase and laid it flat on the horseshoe table in front of Marco Moretti.

"These are the transfer deeds," I said. "By marrying Nikolai, I have voluntarily consolidated the entire Hart political network under Nikolai’s branch of the Moretti syndicate. Julian offered you a pretty face. I brought you the entire city's legal infrastructure."

Marco opened the folder, scanning the legal deeds with rapidly mounting satisfaction. The other six council members leaned in, whispering urgently among themselves as they saw the sheer value of the assets I had brought to Nikolai.

"This is absurd!" my father shouted from the back. "I am the head of the Hart family! I will fight those deeds in court!"

I turned slowly to face my father. "You can try, Arthur. But you assigned those trustee rights to me on my twenty-fifth birthday to avoid corporate taxes. The court will throw your lawsuit out in five minutes—and Nikolai's attorneys will counter-sue you for fraud."

My father gasped, completely trapped by his own historical greed.

Marco Moretti slammed his heavy fist onto the table, shattering the silence.

"The council has seen enough!" Marco roared. "The marriage is valid! The asset transfer is approved! Nikolai Moretti retains the primary succession line for the Midwest syndicate!"

Julian’s face collapsed into absolute ruin. "Father, no! You can't do this!"

"Get out, Julian!" Marco barked. "You brought us a child's tantrum. Nikolai brought us an empire."
