PART 3: THE WOMAN WHO STOLE MY LIFE

Preston never noticed Khloe.

He couldn't.

He was staring at the death certificate as though the words refused to make sense.

His fingers trembled so violently that the paper slipped from his grasp.

A nurse bent to retrieve it.

He didn't even look at her.

"I..."

His voice cracked.

"There has to be a mistake."

The nurse's expression softened.

"I'm very sorry, Captain Hale."

"No."

He shook his head repeatedly.

"I was supposed to come sooner."

"I..."

He covered his face with both hands.

"I thought she was recovering."

Recovering.

The word twisted inside my chest.

Three days.

For three days he hadn't come to the hospital.

Three days while I fought to breathe.

Three days while strangers kept me alive.

Three days while another woman wore my jewelry.

Only after believing I was dead...

He finally showed up.

Dr. Rebecca Morgan quietly stood beside my bed.

"Do you want us to lower the blinds completely?"

I watched Preston kneeling in the hallway.

The strongest man I had ever known looked completely shattered.

Slowly...

I shook my head.

"No."

"I need to see this."

Not because I wanted revenge.

Because I needed the truth.

Was he grieving me...

Or grieving his guilt?

From the far end of the hallway, Khloe finally began walking toward him.

She moved carefully.

One hand resting dramatically against her chest.

A light bandage wrapped around her wrist.

Nothing more.

Smoke inhalation.

Minor burns.

She had already changed into expensive black clothes that looked more appropriate for a widow than a wedding guest.

Every few steps she paused as though overcome with emotion.

I knew that performance.

I had watched it for years.

She reached Preston and knelt beside him.

"Oh, Preston..."

She wrapped her arms around him without hesitation.

"This isn't your fault."

My stomach tightened.

He didn't hug her back.

Not immediately.

He simply stared ahead.

"I left her."

His voice was barely audible.

Khloe stroked his shoulder.

"You had no choice."

"I did."

"You saved the person in greater danger."

"No."

He whispered.

"I saved you."

Silence.

For the first time...

Khloe looked uncertain.

Preston continued staring at the floor.

"I heard Wyatt."

"He told me Tara was trapped."

His breathing became uneven.

"I knew."

Those two words echoed through the hallway.

He knew.

He had known exactly where I was.

Exactly what danger I faced.

And he still walked away.

Tears filled my eyes.

Not because it surprised me anymore.

Because hearing him admit it out loud somehow hurt even more.

Khloe squeezed his hand.

"You'll destroy yourself thinking like this."

He slowly looked toward her.

"I told myself I'd be back in thirty seconds."

"I kept thinking..."

He laughed bitterly.

"...thirty seconds."

His eyes closed.

"When I finally reached the dressing room..."

His voice broke completely.

"There was too much fire."

I remembered.

Wyatt had already dragged me out through the collapsing hallway.

Preston never found me.

He found only flames.

Khloe leaned closer.

"Tara would never blame you."

I almost laughed.

She had no idea how wrong she was.

A quiet knock interrupted the moment.

Another firefighter entered the hallway.

Young.

Nervous.

Wyatt.

The instant Preston saw him, he stood.

Their eyes met.

The silence between them felt heavy.

Finally Preston spoke.

"You found her."

Wyatt nodded once.

"I did."

Preston swallowed hard.

"Thank you."

Wyatt didn't answer.

Instead, he looked at Khloe.

Then at the pearl bracelet still around her wrist.

His expression changed almost imperceptibly.

"You still have that?"

Khloe instinctively covered her wrist.

"What?"

"The bracelet."

"Oh..."

She forced a smile.

"Tara gave it to me."

My heart almost stopped.

Liar.

Wyatt frowned slightly.

"When?"

"The morning of the wedding."

"She said it matched my dress."

Every word came effortlessly.

As though she'd rehearsed it.

Wyatt didn't look convinced.

"I thought it belonged to her grandmother."

Khloe laughed too quickly.

"It did."

"She wanted me to have it."

I watched Wyatt carefully.

He wasn't buying it.

Not for one second.

Later that afternoon, Wyatt knocked quietly on my hospital room door.

Dr. Morgan allowed him inside.

He looked troubled.

"I saw him."

"I know."

He sat beside my bed.

"He believes you're gone."

I nodded.

Then asked the question that had haunted me all morning.

"Do you think he loved me?"

Wyatt looked genuinely uncomfortable.

Finally he answered honestly.

"I think..."

"...he believed he did."

Not the answer I wanted.

But probably the truthful one.

"What does that mean?"

Wyatt stared at the floor.

"My father used to tell me something."

He smiled sadly.

"'Love isn't measured by promises.'"

"It's measured by choices."

Neither of us spoke for several seconds.

He quietly continued.

"When the fire started..."

"Captain Hale made his choice."

The room fell silent.

Because neither of us could deny it.

Just before sunset, Detective Daniel Brooks returned.

This time he wasn't alone.

A woman in a navy business suit accompanied him.

She introduced herself.

"My name is Allison Grant."

"I'm with the Fire Department's Internal Investigation Division."

That immediately caught my attention.

Internal Affairs.

Allison opened a thick folder.

"We've reviewed radio transmissions."

My pulse quickened.

"And?"

She slid several printed pages toward me.

"Captain Hale's communications during the fire."

I read slowly.

Every timestamp.

Every order.

Then...

One line froze me.

14:17:08

"Bride confirmed trapped. Door blocked."

My breathing stopped.

The next transmission came twelve seconds later.

14:17:20

"Captain responding to civilian with respiratory distress."

I looked up.

"He officially knew."

Allison nodded.

"Yes."

"And he documented it."

Another page followed.

A map of the estate.

Escape routes.

Emergency exits.

She pointed toward a highlighted hallway.

"Khloe Mason was less than fifteen feet from an open exterior exit."

I stared at the diagram.

She continued quietly.

"Your dressing room had no secondary exit."

The implication was devastating.

Khloe could have walked outside with assistance.

I couldn't.

Yet Preston had gone to her.

Allison hesitated before opening one final envelope.

"We also recovered security footage."

My heartbeat accelerated.

"From inside the bridal hallway."

She placed several printed still images on the bed.

The first showed me entering the dressing room.

The second...

Made my blood turn cold.

Khloe.

Standing outside my door.

Looking both directions.

Then bending toward the handle.

"What..."

The final image answered everything.

She wasn't trying to open my door.

She was sliding a decorative bronze storage chest directly in front of it.

Blocking it.

I couldn't speak.

I couldn't breathe.

Allison's voice became almost a whisper.

"We believe..."

"...your door didn't become trapped during the fire."

She let that sentence settle.

Then finished it.

"It appears someone blocked it..."

"...before the fire ever reached your hallway."

The world seemed to stop spinning.

This hadn't been an accident.

Not entirely.

Someone had intentionally trapped me inside.

And the last person seen outside my dressing room...

Was Khloe Mason.

But Allison wasn't finished.

She slowly removed one final evidence bag.

Inside lay a small silver key.

Recovered from the hallway floor.

Attached to it...

Was a burned white ribbon.

I recognized it instantly.

It belonged to the jewelry box that had held my wedding ring.

My missing ring hadn't disappeared in the fire.

Someone had taken it.

And according to the hospital records...

That stolen ring was the only reason the world now believed Tara Bennett was dead.

The detective looked me straight in the eyes.

Then asked the question that changed everything.

"Ms. Bennett..."

May you like

"Did someone want you dead..."

"...or did someone want your life?"
