PART 4: THE WOMAN WHO STOLE MY NAME

Detective Allison Grant's question lingered in the room long after she stopped speaking.
Did someone want me dead...
Or did someone want my life?
Until that moment, I had believed the fire was a tragic accident made worse by terrible decisions.
Now, every memory rearranged itself into something far darker.
The missing bracelet.
The stolen wedding ring.
The blocked dressing room door.
Khloe standing outside my room just minutes before the fire.
None of it felt accidental anymore.
Someone had been preparing for something.
The only question was...
How long?
I looked at Detective Brooks.
"What happens now?"
He exchanged a glance with Allison.
"Officially..."
He chose his words carefully.
"...you are deceased."
I almost laughed.
Officially.
Such a strange word.
According to every government database, every insurance record, and every hospital document...
I no longer existed.
"So I can't simply walk outside."
"No."
Allison answered immediately.
"If whoever planned this believes you're dead..."
"That belief is protecting you."
Dr. Morgan nodded.
"I agree."
"Your burns still need treatment."
"You aren't physically strong enough to protect yourself."
I stared toward the hospital window.
Snow drifted gently across the parking lot.
"I've spent my entire life telling the truth."
"And now you're asking me to pretend I'm dead."
Allison met my eyes.
"I'm asking you to stay alive."
Meanwhile...
On the other side of the hospital...
Preston refused to leave.
Nurses later told me he spent nearly two hours sitting alone in the hospital chapel.
Still wearing his soot-stained dress shoes from the fire investigation.
Still holding the folded death certificate in his hands.
No phone.
No reporters.
No fellow firefighters.
Just silence.
Eventually, one of the hospital chaplains approached him.
"Captain Hale?"
He looked up slowly.
"I'm sorry for your loss."
Preston swallowed.
"I failed her."
The chaplain sat beside him.
"Many people blame themselves after tragedy."
"You don't understand."
His voice broke.
"I heard her."
The older man frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"I heard Tara calling for me."
Silence.
"I walked away."
For several seconds, the chaplain didn't know what to say.
Finally...
He asked quietly,
"Why?"
Preston closed his eyes.
"Because someone else needed me."
Even now...
He couldn't say Khloe's name.
Later that evening, Wyatt Ross returned.
This time he wasn't alone.
He carried a laptop.
"I think you need to see something."
Detective Brooks connected it to the television mounted on my hospital wall.
Hospital security footage?
"No."
Wyatt shook his head.
"Wedding venue security."
"I requested everything before the system automatically erased it."
The first camera showed guests arriving.
Another showed caterers unloading supplies.
Nothing unusual.
Then...
Camera Six.
Second-floor hallway.
Time stamp:
1:42 p.m.
I appeared, entering the bridal suite.
Two minutes later...
Khloe walked into the hallway.
She looked both directions.
Then removed something from her handbag.
A key.
She unlocked my dressing-room door.
Went inside.
Stayed exactly forty-three seconds.
Then walked back out.
Holding something small inside her bouquet.
My jewelry.
She had stolen it.
The footage continued.
At 1:47 p.m.
She dragged the decorative bronze storage chest directly beside my door.
Not enough to block it completely.
Just enough that...
If panic erupted...
If people rushed through the hallway...
If furniture shifted...
The chest would wedge against the door.
Creating a trap.
Allison paused the video.
"No one else touched it afterward."
I stared at the frozen image.
Khloe wasn't smiling.
She wasn't nervous.
She looked...
Calm.
Prepared.
Like someone following a plan.
The room remained silent until Wyatt quietly spoke.
"I noticed something else."
He fast-forwarded several minutes.
Another figure entered the hallway.
Preston.
He kissed me through the dressing-room doorway before leaving.
I remembered that moment.
"I'll see you in twenty minutes."
Then he disappeared downstairs.
Exactly thirty seconds later...
Khloe returned.
She watched him leave.
Then smiled.
Not a happy smile.
A satisfied one.
She whispered something the hallway camera couldn't hear.
Then walked away.
A chill ran through me.
That night I couldn't sleep.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw her smiling outside my dressing room.
Around midnight, Dr. Morgan entered carrying fresh test results.
"Your lungs are improving."
"That's good."
She hesitated.
"But your burns..."
I nodded.
"I know."
"The scars will fade."
She smiled gently.
"Not completely."
I looked down at my bandaged hands.
"They don't have to."
She seemed surprised.
I continued quietly.
"They'll remind me."
"Of what?"
"Never confusing promises with love again."
The following morning...
Something unexpected happened.
Grace Holloway, the hospital's legal administrator, hurried into my room.
Her face looked unusually tense.
"We have a problem."
Detective Brooks immediately stood.
"What happened?"
She handed him several documents.
"They're here."
"Who's here?"
She swallowed.
"Captain Hale."
My heartbeat accelerated.
"And?"
"He isn't alone."
Another pause.
"Khloe Mason came with him."
The room fell silent.
Grace continued.
"They're requesting access to Tara Bennett's personal belongings."
I frowned.
"My belongings?"
"The clothing recovered after the fire."
"My jewelry."
"My engagement ring."
Everything.
Allison immediately understood.
"They're trying to recover evidence."
"No."
I whispered.
"Khloe is."
Because if my ring...
Or bracelet...
Or anything else connected her to the bridal suite...
She would want it gone forever.
Dr. Morgan looked toward me.
"We can deny the request."
Before anyone answered...
A young nurse rushed into the room.
"Doctor!"
"What?"
"They're arguing downstairs."
Everyone turned.
The nurse looked frightened.
"Captain Hale says..."
She took a breath.
"...he wants to see Tara one last time."
Silence.
"He refuses to leave until someone lets him say goodbye."
I closed my eyes.
For the first time since the fire...
I felt something besides anger.
Sadness.
Because somewhere downstairs...
The man I had once planned to spend my life with...
Was begging to see the woman he believed he'd buried.
Completely unaware...
That only one floor above him...
I was standing at the window.
Watching him.
But before anyone could decide what to do...
Detective Brooks' phone rang.
He answered.
Listened.
His expression changed instantly.
"What?"
Everyone waited.
He slowly lowered the phone.
"The fire lab just finished testing the debris."
"What did they find?" Allison asked.
He looked directly at me.
"The fire..."
He paused.
"...didn't start because of the candles."
My entire body went still.
"It started because someone poured an accelerant inside the bridal hallway."
Another silence.
Then came the sentence that changed the entire investigation.
"And the only fingerprints recovered from the accelerant container..."
May you like
He looked down at the report.
"...belong to Khloe Mason."
