Chapter 2 - The Truth Behind the Trust

By eight o'clock the following morning, the sun broke through the grey fog over the hospital, casting long, clean light across the floor of room 412.
Dr. Patel walked in with a heavy tablet in hand, followed by a transport coordinator from the Boston Children's Medical Center.
"Marissa," Dr. Patel said, a genuine smile softening his tired face. "We just received direct wire confirmation and authorization from the Rhodes Trust. The private air transport team is en route. Holly is scheduled for admission in Boston by two o'clock this afternoon."
I felt a sharp tear escape my eye, but for the first time in months, it was a tear of profound relief. "Thank you, Dr. Patel."
While the transport team prepared Holly for the journey, Calvin Rhodes himself stepped into the room. At sixty-two, Calvin was a tall, imposing man with crisp grey hair, wearing a dark bespoke suit that radiated quiet power. He had been my mother’s closest business ally, a man who had built shipping networks and managed venture capital before retiring to run private wealth foundations.
"Marissa," Calvin said gently, extending a warm hand before pulling me into a brief, protective embrace. "How is our girl?"
"She's stable," I whispered, looking at Holly. "Calvin... thank you. I didn't know if you could move that fast."
Calvin gave a low, quiet chuckle. "Your mother knew what Derek was the day you brought him to dinner six years ago, Marissa. She knew he was a parasitic opportunist who looked at your work ethic as something to exploit. Before she passed, she made me promise one thing: that if he ever tried to bleed you dry, I would tear his life down to the bedrock."
Calvin pulled a leather folder from his leather briefcase and handed it to me.
"While you were sitting by Holly’s bed, my legal team dug into Derek’s commercial activities over the past eighteen months," Calvin explained. "He hasn't just been sleeping with your sister, Marissa. He’s been funneling money out of his architectural firm's client escrow accounts to finance Vanessa’s luxury apartment down town."
My stomach turned. "He was stealing from his own clients?"
"Worse," Calvin said coldly. "He used your mother’s name on a fraudulent loan application three months ago, forging your signature as a co-signer to secure a two-hundred-thousand-dollar line of credit. He thought that when Holly passed away, you would be too paralyzed by grief to ever inspect the family paperwork."
I stared at the signed documents inside the folder. There was my forged signature, written in Derek's slanted, hurried handwriting.

"He didn't just want Holly's trust money for his new child," I realized, the horror settling in. "He was drowning in debt. He needed Holly to die so he could inherit her estate and cover his crimes."
"Precisely," Calvin said. "But he made two fatal mistakes. He underestimated your strength, and he forgot that your mother left her legal dogs on a short leash. The district attorney in your county has already received the financial audit. Derek won't just be broke by nightfall; he’ll be facing grand larceny charges."
