Chapter 3 - The Miracle in Boston and the Unraveling

The transfer to Boston Children's Hospital was a blur of medical precision and quiet hope. Within forty-eight hours of our arrival, the specialized oncology team initiated the targeted gene therapy—a cutting-edge protocol that specifically addressed the genetic mutation driving Holly's leukemia.
I sat beside her bed in the high-tech pediatric wing, holding her small hand while the clear IV fluids dripped steadily.
On the fifth day, Holly’s eyes fluttered open.
The pale, yellowish hue on her cheeks had begun to recede. She looked up at me, her brown eyes clear, focused, and bright for the first time in months.
"Mommy?" she whispered, her voice tiny but smooth.
"I'm right here, baby," I said, leaning down to press my cheek against hers. "I'm right here."
"Where are we?" she asked, looking around the bright room filled with flowers that Calvin had arranged.
"We're in Boston, sweetheart. The doctors are giving you the special medicine that fixes your blood."
Holly smiled softly, her fingers tightening around my thumb. "Does that mean my legs won't hurt anymore?"
"They won't hurt anymore," I promised, tears streaming down my face. "Not ever again."
While Holly fought her way back to life in Boston, Derek and Vanessa’s world collapsed in spectacular fashion back home.
Deprived of access to any funds, Derek was unable to pay his high-priced retainer to his defense lawyers. Within seventy-two hours, his firm’s partners discovered the escrow discrepancies and filed a formal criminal complaint with the police department. By Thursday morning, local news channels broadcast footage of Derek being led out of his office building in handcuffs, charged with felony forgery, wire fraud, and grand larceny.
Vanessa fared no better. When the news broke, her high-end interior design clients abandoned her en masse, cancelling contracts and demanding refunds for unfulfilled orders. To make matters worse, the landlord of her luxury downtown apartment issued an immediate eviction notice after her rental check bounced.

Desperate, Vanessa tried to call me fifty times a day. When I blocked her number, she sent frantic emails begging for forgiveness, claiming she was a victim of Derek's manipulation, pleading with me to release enough money from our mother's estate so she wouldn't have to give birth in a public hospital.
I deleted every single message without replying.
