Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Execution

By 8:00 AM, the sun had risen over a crisp, frozen Chicago skyline.

Inside the glass-walled executive boardroom on the forty-fifth floor of Holloway Systems HQ, Grant Holloway was sitting at the head of the conference table, sipping an espresso.

He was feeling triumphant.

After leaving the penthouse early that morning, he had spent the night at Vanessa’s high-rise condo in River North. In his mind, he had finally established total dominance over his wife. Claire was broken. She had no family to run to, no independent income, and no courage left to challenge him.

Vanessa Reid sat beside him, reviewing a tablet while applying a fresh coat of red lipstick.

"Did she give you any trouble after I left?" Vanessa asked, her tone completely detached.

"She won't be giving us any trouble ever again," Grant scoffed, adjusting his cuffs. "I made it very clear who controls this company and who controls her life. By the time I get home tonight, she'll have the apartment cleaned and an apology waiting."

"Good," Vanessa said, smoothing her skirt. "Because once the board approves the international expansion proposal today, we can transfer the secondary intellectual property rights into our private offshore entity in Grand Cayman. She'll never be able to touch a dime of it in a divorce."

The heavy double doors of the boardroom suddenly swung open.

Four men in dark suits stepped inside, taking up positions along the perimeter of the room.

Grant frowned, rising from his chair. "What is the meaning of this? Who authorized security to enter the executive suite?"

Before he could finish his sentence, Victor Vance stepped through the doorway, holding a thick leather briefcase.

Grant froze. As a figure in the Chicago financial world, he recognized Victor Vance immediately. Victor was the primary legal hammer of Whitmore Capital—a man who only appeared when a corporate empire was about to be torn apart.

"Mr. Vance?" Grant said, his tone instantly shifting into a nervous, overly respectful smile. "What an unexpected honor. Is Mr. Warren Whitmore considering an investment in our expansion?"

Victor didn't smile. He didn't offer a handshake. He walked directly to the head of the table, pulled out a chair directly opposite Grant, and sat down.

"Mr. Holloway," Victor began, his voice ringing with cold precision. "As of 7:30 this morning, an emergency meeting of the supermajority shareholders of Holloway Systems was conducted."

Grant laughed nervously, looking around the room. "Supermajority shareholders? What are you talking about? I own this company. I am the founder and CEO."

Victor pulled a stack of legal documents from his briefcase and slid them across the polished mahogany table.

"You own eleven point four percent of non-voting common stock, Grant," Victor said flatly. "The remaining eighty-eight point six percent of voting stock is held by the Whitmore Family Irrevocable Trust, managed directly by Whitmore Capital."

Vanessa’s head snapped up. Her face turned pale. "That's impossible. Our cap table shows Apex Ventures—"

"Apex Ventures is a hundred percent subsidiary of Whitmore Capital," Victor interrupted, his eyes shifting to Vanessa like ice. "Which brings us to you, Ms. Reid. As Chief Financial Officer, you have systematically embezzled four point two million dollars over twenty-four months into a shell company registered under your maiden name in Delaware. You did this to fund private real estate purchases and high-yield offshore accounts."

Vanessa’s hand trembled so violently she dropped her tablet onto the table. "That... that's a lie!"

"The forensic accounting trail was completed three hours ago by FBI Financial Crimes Unit investigators," Victor said smoothly. "They are currently waiting downstairs in the lobby."

Grant stood up, his face turning bright red with rage. "This is absurd! This is Claire's doing, isn't it?! That pathetic, ungrateful bitch called her father because she couldn't handle a simple domestic disagreement!"

The moment those words left Grant's mouth, the temperature in the room plummeted to absolute zero.

The double doors opened wide once more.

My father walked into the room.

He didn't look like an elderly retired billionaire. He walked with the heavy, unstoppable momentum of a storm. Beside him walked Malcolm Shaw, who carried a long velvet box.

Grant backed up two steps, his arrogance instantly evaporating as he looked into Warren Whitmore’s murderous eyes. "Mr. Whitmore... sir... please, let's discuss this reasonably—"

Warren didn't say a word.

He stepped up to Grant, grabbed him by the collar of his custom thousand-dollar suit, and slammed him back against the floor-to-ceiling glass window overlooking the city.

The glass rattled violently.

"You lay a hand on my daughter," Warren whispered, his voice vibrating with a terrifying, ancient rage, "and you talk to me about reason?"

"I... I can explain!" Grant choked out, his eyes wide with pure, unadulterated terror. "She insulted me! She was trying to ruin my business!"

Warren tightened his grip on Grant's collar until the younger man was gasping for air.

"This business was a gift to my daughter," Warren said coldly. "You were merely the boy she brought home. You were allowed to play the big man because it made her happy. But you forgot where the power lived, Grant. You thought you were the lion. You were just the dog we let sit at the table."

Warren threw Grant back onto the floor like a piece of trash.

Malcolm stepped forward, opening the long velvet box he carried.

Inside lay the black antique cane Grant had used on me six hours earlier. The silver handle was stained with my dried blood.

Grant looked at the cane, then at Warren, his breathing rapid and shallow.

"That cane," Victor Vance said calmly from the table, "has been processed by crime scene technicians. Your fingerprints are all over it. The blood matching Claire's DNA is preserved on the tip. A warrant for your arrest on charges of aggravated domestic battery, assault with a deadly weapon, and attempted murder has already been signed by a Cook County judge."

Grant looked at Vanessa. "Vanessa... call our lawyers!"

Vanessa didn't look at him. She was staring at the doorway, where two uniformed FBI agents and two Chicago police officers were already walking toward her with handcuffs drawn.

"Grant Holloway," the lead police officer said, stepping up to Grant as he lay on the floor. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

As the steel handcuffs clicked around Grant’s wrists, Warren leaned down, his eyes cold and unwavering.

"By twelve o'clock today," Warren whispered, "your name will be stripped from this building. Your bank accounts will be frozen under federal asset forfeiture laws. And your son... Leo... will learn what happens when a father abandons his responsibilities."

Grant looked up, his voice cracking into a desperate plea. "Mr. Whitmore! Please! I love Claire! I was confused! It was Vanessa! She tricked me!"

Vanessa spat in Grant's direction as the FBI agents cuffed her hands behind her back. "Shut up, you pathetic coward! You were the one who wanted her gone!"

Warren didn't watch them as they were dragged down the hallway in front of hundreds of whispering employees. He turned to Victor.

"Initiate the receivership," Warren ordered flatly. "And bring my daughter her company."
