Chapter 4 - The Fall of the Mistress

By noon, the news of Grant Holloway’s arrest and the collapse of Holloway Systems had sent shockwaves through the American financial markets.

The company's stock dropped seventy percent in forty-five minutes before trading was officially halted by the SEC. Media helicopters circled the corporate headquarters in downtown Chicago, capturing footage of federal agents carrying box after box of files out of the executive suite.

I sat in a plush armchair in my father’s penthouse overlooking Lake Michigan, wearing a soft white cashmere sweater that covered the heavy bandages on my arms.

My wrist was immobilized in a black brace, but my mind was clearer than it had been in eight years.

Malcolm Shaw entered the room quietly, carrying a silver tray with hot tea and a secure tablet.

"Miss Whitmore," Malcolm said gently, placing the tray on the side table. "Ms. Vanessa Reid’s legal team has reached out to Mr. Vance. She is attempting to negotiate a plea deal with the State's Attorney."

I looked up from my tea. "What kind of plea deal?"

"She is offering to testify against Grant regarding financial fraud, tax evasion, and corporate embezzlement in exchange for dropping the state conspiracy charges," Malcolm explained. "She claims Grant forced her to funnel the four point two million dollars into the offshore Delaware account."

I picked up the tablet, scrolling through the legal documents Victor had uploaded.

"Where is the child?" I asked softly.

Malcolm hesitated. "Leo is currently with a court-appointed child welfare officer. Since both Grant and Vanessa are in federal custody without bail, and neither family has stepped forward to take temporary custody, the boy is in state emergency care."

My finger hovered over the tablet screen.

A picture of the four-year-old boy popped up—a child with bright blue eyes and messy blond hair, completely innocent of the corporate war and psychological madness surrounding his parents.

I looked at my father, who was standing near the fireplace reading a private intelligence report.

"Dad," I said quietly.

Warren turned around. "Yes, Claire?"

"I want Vanessa Reid to lose everything," I said, my voice steady and unyielding. "I want her to serve every single day of her sentence for what she did to this company and for helping Grant cover up his abuse. But I don't want that boy in foster care."

Warren stared at me for a moment, a subtle mixture of pride and quiet sorrow in his dark eyes. "Claire... that boy is the product of your husband's betrayal."

"He's a four-year-old child, Dad," I said firmly. "He didn't choose Grant as a father, and he didn't choose Vanessa as a mother. I won't let him be destroyed because two greedy adults ruined their lives."

Warren took a deep breath, nodding slowly to Malcolm. "Arrange for top-tier private guardianship for the boy under the Whitmore Foundation umbrella. Place two million dollars in an educational trust that opens when he turns twenty-one. Ensure he never wants for food, shelter, or education—but make sure Vanessa Reid never sees a single dollar of that money."

"Understood, Mr. Whitmore," Malcolm replied, bowing before stepping out to execute the order.

Ten minutes later, Victor Vance entered the room, holding a stack of court filings.

"The bail hearing for Grant Holloway just concluded," Victor reported, pulling up a chair. "The judge reviewed the medical reports, the photographic evidence of the physical assault, and the forensic financial analysis. Bail was denied. He will remain in Cook County Jail until trial."

"How is he handling it?" I asked, my voice completely stripped of emotion.

Victor permitted himself a small, dark smile. "He broke down in tears when the judge read the indictment. He attempted to claim he was having a psychological breakdown caused by corporate stress. His appointed public defender—since all his personal credit cards and accounts have been frozen—looked visibly embarrassed to represent him."

"And the company?"

"As of one hour ago," Victor said, handing me a heavy gold pen, "Holloway Systems has been formally rebranded as Whitmore Logistics & Technology Solutions. The board of directors has unanimously voted to appoint you as Chief Executive Officer."

I looked down at the documents laying on the table before me.

Eight years ago, I had walked away from my family name because I believed love meant sacrificing my identity for a man who claimed he would build the world for me. I had swept his floors, edited his pitches, endured his insecurities, and finally, taken his blows while he tried to erase me.

Now, holding the gold pen, I signed my name at the bottom of the executive charter:

Claire Whitmore.

Not Mrs. Grant Holloway.

Claire Whitmore.
