Part 2

The neighbor finally heard me.

Mrs. Alvarez from next door rushed inside.

The moment she saw me, her face changed.

She found me barefoot, shaking, holding Noah like I was trying to keep him alive with my own heartbeat.

“Oh my God, Grace…”

She immediately grabbed her phone.

“Call an ambulance,” she shouted.

I could barely speak.

“My husband… he’s gone.”

She looked at me.

“Gone where?”

I couldn’t answer.

Because the truth sounded impossible.

My husband had left me alone with our newborn baby to go on vacation with another woman.

The ambulance arrived minutes later.

The flashing lights filled the driveway.

Doctors rushed Noah away from me, and I remember grabbing the nurse’s arm.

“Please,” I begged. “Save him.”

The nurse looked into my eyes.

“We’re going to do everything we can.”

But when they took him from my arms, it felt like someone ripped my heart out.

At the hospital, doctors moved quickly.

Machines.

Monitors.

Questions.

Everything blurred together.

I kept repeating the same words.

“Please let him be okay.”

Hours passed.

Then my mother-in-law, Vivian, arrived.

I expected comfort.

A hug.

Anything.

Instead, she walked in calmly, adjusting her expensive coat and pearl earrings.

“You look terrible,” she said.

I stared at her.

“My son is in the ICU.”

She sighed.

“Grace, don’t make this dramatic.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

She stepped closer.

“Do you know how this looks? Daniel gone during a family emergency?”

My eyes filled with tears.

“He abandoned his son.”

Her expression hardened.

“Men make mistakes.”

Then she lowered her voice.

“And mothers protect families.”

I looked at her.

Really looked at her.

And for the first time, I understood.

She wasn’t here because she cared about Noah.

She was here to protect Daniel.
