Chapter 3 - The Price of Silence

The next morning, Jared found me in the garden, pruning the roses—a task I had always found meditative. He approached me with his usual, oily charm. “You shouldn't be out here, Shelby. The doctor said your recovery is fragile.”
“The doctor,” I said, not looking up, “is a hack. And you, Jared, are a mediocre thief.”
He stopped dead, his smile faltering. “Excuse me?”
“I know about the company. I know about my father. And I know about the child.”
His face shifted—from confusion, to shock, to a chilling, predatory focus. He stepped into my personal space, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. “You think you’re so smart. You think that because you’ve read some files, you can threaten me? You’re a shell of a woman now. Who’s going to believe you? The woman who couldn't even keep a child?”
The cruelty of the jab didn't hurt me; it fueled the fire. “The world loves a martyr, Jared. And they love a comeback even more.”
He grabbed my arm, his fingers digging into the skin. “You won’t do anything. You’ll take the settlement, you’ll disappear to the coast, and you’ll be grateful you’re still alive.”

He left for the office, convinced he had intimidated me into submission. He didn't see the tiny microphone I had sewn into the lining of my cardigan. He didn't know that the conversation had been broadcast live to Elena Thorne’s office, where every word was being transcribed and notarized.
I spent the afternoon preparing. I moved the digital assets, ensuring that when the hammer fell, he wouldn't be able to salvage a single cent. I was no longer playing to win; I was playing to erase him from the map.
