Chapter 4 - The Tipping Point

The unveiling occurred at the annual Harlan Media shareholders' meeting. It was a gala-style event, televised live. Jared was at the height of his influence, standing on the stage, the spotlight reflecting off his expensive suit.

I walked into the ballroom five minutes before his keynote. I wasn't wearing my hospital gown anymore. I wore a crimson suit—the color of a warning.

Jared saw me, his eyes widening. He signaled to security, but Elena Thorne intercepted them with a court order that froze the entire event.

“What is this?” Jared demanded, stepping off the stage, his face pale.

“It’s the end of the show, Jared,” I said, stepping up to the microphone.

I didn't need to speak. I tapped the remote in my hand.

The massive screen behind him flickered to life. It didn't show revenue projections. It showed the video of the hospital hallway. It showed the audio recordings of the surgery. It showed the bank transfers that proved he had been embezzling from his own company for years.

The room erupted in chaos. Reporters shoved their cameras forward, shouting questions. The board of directors stared, horrified, at the evidence of their own complicity.

Courtney Briggs, who had been sitting in the front row, stood up, her face a mask of panic. She tried to rush toward Jared, but the security team—now acting under the board’s orders—blocked her path.

Jared didn't look at her. He didn't look at the crowd. He looked at me, his eyes filled with a desperate, pathetic realization. “Shelby... we can talk about this.”

“We’re done talking, Jared,” I said, my voice echoing throughout the massive hall. “You wanted an heir? You wanted a legacy? All you have left is the ruin you built for yourself.”
