PART 1: THE WOMAN MY HUSBAND BELIEVED

The first time my husband looked at me like I was a stranger, I realized our marriage had already ended.

It just took another woman to make him admit it.

My name is Emily Carter.

I'm thirty-two years old.

Until that Tuesday evening, I believed my marriage still had something worth saving.

I was wrong.

The grandfather clock in our foyer had just struck six when I heard the front door open.

Daniel was home earlier than usual.

For months, that had never happened.

Normally he stayed at the office until eight or nine, claiming endless meetings, demanding clients, and impossible deadlines.

But lately, I had stopped asking questions.

Not because I trusted him.

Because I already knew the answers.

The smell of expensive perfume always reached the house before he did.

It wasn't mine.

I stood in the kitchen slicing strawberries for dessert when I heard laughter drifting down the hallway.

A woman's laughter.

My fingers froze around the knife.

No.

He wouldn't.

Not here.

Not in our home.

The front door opened wider.

Daniel walked in first, carrying a designer garment bag.

Behind him came Rachel Monroe.

Tall.

Elegant.

Perfectly styled.

Her hand rested possessively around Daniel's arm.

She smiled the moment she saw me.

Not politely.

Triumphantly.

"Emily."

Her voice dripped with sweetness.

"I hope we're not interrupting dinner."

I looked at Daniel.

He avoided my eyes.

"What is she doing here?"

Rachel answered before he could.

"I'll be staying for a while."

The words settled over the kitchen like ice.

"I'm sorry?"

Daniel finally spoke.

"Rachel's apartment flooded."

"So she'll stay in the guest room."

I stared at him.

"You invited your employee to live here?"

Rachel laughed softly.

"I'm actually the marketing director now."

My stomach tightened.

Three weeks ago Daniel had mentioned promoting someone.

He never said it was her.

Of course he hadn't.

I slowly placed the knife on the counter.

"No."

Daniel frowned.

"What?"

"No."

"This is our home."

"You don't bring another woman into it."

His jaw tightened.

"She's staying."

"I've already decided."

Our home.

His decision.

As though I no longer existed.

Rachel stepped forward.

"I don't want to cause problems."

The fake concern almost made me laugh.

"I'll stay at a hotel if Emily feels threatened."

Daniel immediately shook his head.

"You're staying here."

Threatened.

Interesting choice of words.

I noticed the tiny smile Rachel tried to hide.

She was enjoying this.

Every second.

I looked at my husband.

"When exactly were you planning to tell me you're having an affair?"

Silence.

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Watch your mouth."

"So that's a yes."

Rachel sighed dramatically.

"I knew she'd accuse us."

"I told you she would."

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

"Emily."

"You're imagining things."

I folded my arms.

"Then look me in the eyes and tell me you've never touched her."

He didn't answer.

That was all the answer I needed.

Three years of marriage collapsed in complete silence.

That night, Rachel unpacked her suitcases into my guest room.

Designer dresses.

Luxury handbags.

Perfume bottles.

Family-sized boxes of prenatal vitamins.

I stopped.

Prenatal?

I picked up the bottle.

Twelve weeks pregnant.

The room spun slightly.

Daniel appeared in the doorway.

He saw what I was holding.

His face changed instantly.

He walked over and quietly took the bottle from my hands.

"Emily..."

"She's pregnant."

Not a question.

A fact.

He nodded once.

I couldn't breathe.

"Is it yours?"

Another pause.

Then...

"Yes."

The single word destroyed everything.

I laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

Because crying suddenly seemed impossible.

"So all those business trips..."

He remained silent.

"The late-night meetings."

Silence.

"The canceled anniversaries."

Nothing.

Rachel appeared behind him wearing silk pajamas.

"I'm sorry you had to find out this way."

"No, you're not."

She tilted her head.

"No."

"I'm not."

At least she was honest.

I slept in the guest bedroom that should have been hers.

She slept in my bedroom.

Beside my husband.

Around midnight I heard them laughing together through the wall.

I covered my ears with a pillow.

It wasn't enough.

The next morning I began looking for divorce attorneys.

I hadn't finished my first phone call before Daniel entered the room.

"What are you doing?"

"Finding a lawyer."

He didn't seem surprised.

Instead...

He looked relieved.

"Good."

"I was hoping you'd make this easier."

"Easier?"

He sat across from me.

"I'll be generous."

"You can keep your car."

I stared.

"My car?"

"The one I bought before I met you?"

He blinked.

"I mean..."

"I'll let you keep the house."

I almost smiled.

"The house my parents left me?"

His confidence slipped for the first time.

Rachel entered carrying coffee.

She handed Daniel one cup.

Ignored me completely.

"We don't have to argue."

She spoke as though she already belonged there.

"We can all be adults."

Adults.

The woman sleeping with another woman's husband wanted to discuss maturity.

Interesting.

By afternoon, my attorney had agreed to meet Friday.

For the first time in weeks...

I felt hopeful.

That feeling lasted exactly twelve hours.

Because Wednesday evening...

Everything exploded.

I was standing beside the kitchen island pouring myself a glass of water.

Rachel walked into the room alone.

She looked unusually cheerful.

"We should talk."

"I don't think so."

"Oh, I do."

She stepped closer.

"So stubborn."

I ignored her.

She leaned across the counter.

"Daniel loves the baby."

"I'm happy for him."

"You don't sound happy."

"I don't care enough to pretend."

Something flashed behind her eyes.

Anger.

For the first time...

Her mask slipped.

"You always thought you were better than me."

"I barely thought about you."

That answer hit harder than any insult.

Her smile disappeared.

"You should have."

Before I could respond...

She glanced toward the hallway.

Then suddenly...

She slammed herself backward.

Her body crashed against the dining chair.

The chair toppled dramatically.

Rachel threw herself onto the hardwood floor.

Both hands wrapped around her stomach.

Then she screamed.

A scream so loud it echoed through the entire house.

"Daniel!"

Tears instantly flooded her eyes.

"Help me!"

Heavy footsteps thundered down the hallway.

Daniel burst into the kitchen.

He saw Rachel lying on the floor.

Saw me standing nearby.

And never asked a single question.

"Emily!"

Rachel reached toward him.

"S-she pushed me..."

"I tried to protect the baby..."

Daniel's face twisted with rage.

He crossed the room in two strides.

Before I could speak...

He shoved me violently backward.

My shoulder slammed into the wall.

The framed wedding portrait crashed beside my head.

Glass exploded across the floor.

Pain shot through my arm.

"Daniel..."

"Don't."

His voice was colder than I had ever heard.

"Don't lie to me again."

"I know exactly what you are."

I stared at him in disbelief.

"I never touched her."

Rachel sobbed harder.

"She told me..."

"...if my baby disappeared..."

"...you'd come back to her."

"What?"

"I never said that!"

Daniel was already helping Rachel into his arms.

He looked at me with complete disgust.

"I should've listened months ago."

Months?

What had Rachel been telling him?

Then...

Police sirens echoed outside.

I frowned.

"Why are the police here?"

Daniel looked straight into my eyes.

"Because she warned me you'd eventually lose control."

My blood ran cold.

"You called them..."

"I called them before I came home."

Everything suddenly made sense.

This wasn't spontaneous.

This was planned.

Two police officers entered moments later.

Rachel cried on command.

Daniel repeated everything she claimed.

Neither of them realized one important detail.

As officers placed handcuffs around my wrists...

I looked past Rachel.

Above the hallway.

Mounted beside the smoke detector.

A tiny red light blinked steadily.

The security camera.

The one Daniel had installed after a neighborhood burglary.

The one everyone forgot existed.

Everyone...

Except me.

Rachel followed my eyes.

For the first time all evening...

Her confident smile disappeared.

And for the first time since my husband chose another woman over his wife...

I stopped crying.

May you like

Because if that camera had been recording...

Someone in this house was about to discover exactly who the real liar was.
