PART 2: THE CAMERA THEY FORGOT

The cold metal of the handcuffs dug into my wrists as Officer Martinez guided me toward the front door.
Rachel let out another dramatic sob.
"Please don't let her near me again."
Daniel wrapped an arm around her shoulders.
"I won't."
His voice carried absolute certainty.
The certainty of a man who had already convicted his own wife.
I stopped walking.
"Officer."
Martinez looked at me.
"Yes, ma'am?"
"I'd like to make a statement."
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"Still trying to lie your way out of this?"
I ignored him.
Instead, I looked directly at the officers.
"Before anyone arrests me, I'd like someone to preserve the security footage from the hallway."
The room became quiet.
Rachel's breathing hitched for the briefest moment.
It lasted less than a second.
But I saw it.
Officer Martinez frowned.
"What security footage?"
I raised my chin toward the ceiling.
"The camera."
"The one above the hallway."
"It records the kitchen, the staircase, and the living room."
Daniel looked up automatically.
His expression changed.
"I forgot about that."
"I know."
I answered calmly.
Rachel suddenly stepped forward.
"Daniel, I don't think—"
Too late.
Officer Martinez was already speaking into his radio.
"We need a technician to secure digital evidence before anyone accesses the system."
Rachel's face turned noticeably pale.
Twenty minutes later, Detective Laura Bennett arrived.
Unlike the patrol officers, she didn't seem interested in anyone's emotions.
She wanted facts.
She photographed the kitchen.
The broken picture frame.
The overturned chair.
The scattered glass.
Then she stood beneath the security camera.
"Who has access to this system?"
Daniel answered.
"I do."
"My phone."
"My laptop."
She wrote something down.
"Anyone else?"
"No."
Rachel quickly added,
"I've never even seen it."
Detective Bennett looked at her.
"You've been staying here?"
"For four days."
"And never noticed the camera?"
Rachel hesitated.
"I..."
"It wasn't important."
The detective nodded without commenting.
An hour later, the forensic technician removed the hard drive.
Rachel became increasingly restless.
She kept checking her phone.
Her hands shook whenever Detective Bennett glanced her way.
Finally she stood.
"I'm not feeling well."
Daniel immediately rushed to her.
"Do you need the hospital?"
"No."
She pressed a hand against her stomach.
"I just..."
"I'm exhausted."
The detective looked up.
"No one leaves until we've completed our interviews."
Rachel forced a smile.
"Of course."
I gave my statement first.
Every answer was simple.
"I never touched her."
"We argued."
"She walked toward the dining table."
"Then she threw herself backward."
Detective Bennett listened quietly.
"You understand that's difficult to believe."
"I do."
"But the camera won't lie."
Daniel's interview lasted almost forty minutes.
When he emerged, he wouldn't look at me.
Rachel was next.
She cried through most of it.
Repeated the same story.
Emily pushed me.
Emily threatened my baby.
Emily wanted revenge.
Every sentence sounded rehearsed.
Around ten that night, Detective Bennett gathered everyone in the living room.
The technician had finished copying the footage.
Daniel wrapped an arm around Rachel.
She leaned against him dramatically.
The detective connected a laptop to the television.
"I'd like everyone to watch this together."
Rachel swallowed.
Hard.
The recording began.
Timestamp:
6:11:42 p.m.
I appeared in the kitchen.
Pouring a glass of water.
Exactly as I remembered.
Three seconds later...
Rachel entered.
The room remained silent.
They watched us talking.
No audio.
Only video.
Rachel stepped closer.
Closer.
Then...
She glanced toward the hallway.
Toward the front door.
Toward the exact direction Daniel would soon enter.
Detective Bennett paused the video.
"Interesting."
She zoomed in.
Rachel's eyes weren't on me.
They were fixed on the hallway.
Almost...
As if she were waiting for someone.
The detective pressed play again.
Rachel suddenly grabbed the edge of the dining chair.
Then...
Without me touching her...
She threw herself backward.
The chair flipped.
She hit the floor.
Clutched her stomach.
And opened her mouth in a scream.
Exactly two seconds later...
Daniel ran into the room.
No one spoke.
The silence became suffocating.
Detective Bennett rewound the footage.
Played it again.
Then once more in slow motion.
Not once did my hands leave my sides.
Not once did I step toward Rachel.
She had staged the entire attack.
Daniel stared at the television.
His face drained of color.
"No..."
Rachel immediately grabbed his arm.
"It doesn't show everything!"
"You came in after—"
The detective interrupted.
"No."
She pointed at the screen.
"The recording is continuous."
"There are no edits."
"No missing frames."
She looked directly at Rachel.
"Mrs. Monroe..."
Rachel quickly corrected her.
"Miss."
The detective nodded.
"Miss Monroe..."
"Would you like to explain why you deliberately fell?"
Rachel's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
For the first time since entering my home...
She had no script.
Officer Martinez stepped toward me.
"I'm removing the handcuffs."
The metal clicked open.
Relief flooded through my aching wrists.
He looked genuinely embarrassed.
"I'm sorry, ma'am."
"You shouldn't have been restrained."
"It's alright."
"No."
He shook his head.
"It isn't."
Daniel finally found his voice.
"Emily..."
I didn't look at him.
Not yet.
He took a hesitant step closer.
"I..."
"I didn't know."
Those four words almost made me laugh.
You didn't know.
No.
Because you never asked.
Detective Bennett wasn't finished.
She turned toward Rachel again.
"Filing a false police report is a criminal offense."
Rachel's eyes widened.
"I was scared."
"You fabricated an assault."
"I panicked."
"You knowingly accused an innocent person."
Rachel looked desperately toward Daniel.
"Tell them."
"Please."
Daniel remained completely still.
The certainty that had filled his face only an hour earlier was gone.
In its place...
Confusion.
Doubt.
Fear.
He slowly looked at Rachel.
"Why?"
Her lips trembled.
"I..."
"I love you."
"So you framed my wife?"
"I wanted us to be together."
The room fell completely silent.
Then she whispered the sentence that changed everything.
"I couldn't let her stay in the way."
My heart skipped.
Detective Bennett narrowed her eyes.
"What exactly do you mean by that?"
Rachel froze.
Realizing she had said too much.
Far too much.
She slowly backed away.
Then...
Her phone vibrated inside her purse.
The screen lit up.
The detective happened to glance down.
So did I.
The message preview was only six words long.
Did she get arrested? Finish it.
Rachel's face turned white.
She grabbed for the phone.
But Detective Bennett was faster.
"Don't touch it."
Every police officer in the room suddenly became alert.
Because that message proved one terrifying thing.
Rachel hadn't acted alone.
May you like
Someone else had been waiting...
To make sure I never walked free.
