Chapter 3 - The Unraveling

Eleanor stepped forward, her voice high and trembling with indignation, though her eyes were wide with fear as she recognized the silver-haired man. "Arthur... Arthur Vale? What is the meaning of this outrage? You broke down our security gate! This is private property! I will have the chief of police here in five minutes!"
Arthur Vale didn't even turn his head toward her. He unbuttoned his wool overcoat, took it off, and wrapped it gently around my shoulders. His hands were warm, steady, and smelled of cedar and fine tobacco.
"Dad," I said, holding his lapel. "I want my things. And I want them out of this house."
Julian Sterling, the lead attorney, stepped forward, opening a leather binder under the shelter of an umbrella held by an assistant.
"Mr. Adrian Hawthorne," Julian said, his voice clinical and carrying effortlessly over the sound of the rain. "I am Julian Sterling, Chief Legal Counsel for Vale Consolidated. I am serving you with three immediate legal notices."
Adrian stared at the attorney, his jaw hanging open, his mind struggling to process the names. "Vale... Consolidated? You're... you're Arthur Vale's personal lawyer. Why are you here for Claire?"
"Because Claire Vance is Claire Vale," Arthur said, turning his gaze to Adrian for the first time. The sheer, predatory weight of my father's eyes made Adrian take an involuntary step backward. "She is my daughter. My only child."
Vanessa dropped her crystal wine glass. It shattered on the marble tile of the porch, dark red wine spreading like a pool of blood around her feet.
"No..." Eleanor whispered, her hand going to her throat as her face lost every trace of color. "No, that's impossible. She... she drove a five-year-old Honda. She worked at a community garden! She didn't have a trust fund!"
"She wanted a life free from people like you," my father said softly. "She wanted to see if your son loved her for who she was. Clearly, he failed the test."
Julian Sterling pulled three thick documents from his briefcase and handed them to Adrian, who took them with trembling hands.
"Notice number one," Julian announced, ticking off a finger. "A formal petition for emergency divorce filed on grounds of severe domestic cruelty, infidelity, and endangerment of a pregnant spouse. Notice number two: A freezing order issued by the State Supreme Court ninety minutes ago, locking all joint accounts, credit lines, and corporate assets tied to the Hawthorne name pending asset discovery."
"You can't freeze our accounts!" Adrian yelled, his voice cracking with sudden, rising panic. "My father's company is private! We have our own funding!"
"Notice number three," Julian continued smoothly, ignoring the outburst. "Notice of immediate eviction."
Eleanor let out a sharp, hysterical screech. "Eviction?! This house has been in the Hawthorne family for forty years!"
Julian pulled a land deed from his file and held it under the light. "Correction, Mrs. Hawthorne. The house was built by your late husband using a thirty-year commercial land lease granted by Apex Holdings. Apex Holdings is a wholly owned subsidiary of Vale Consolidated. The lease expired at midnight yesterday. Due to multiple environmental and structural violations committed by your family, Vale Consolidated has declined to renew the lease."

Julian checked his gold wristwatch.
"It is currently 12:14 AM. You are trespassing on land owned outright by Miss Claire Vale. You have ten minutes to collect your personal belongings and vacate the premises."
