Chapter 4 - The Fall of the House of Hawthorne

"Ten minutes?!" Adrian shouted, stepping off the porch toward my father, his fists clenched. "You can't do this! My father is Charles Hawthorne! We are signing a forty-million-dollar funding agreement with your regional directors on Monday! If you ruin this, your own company loses millions!"
Arthur Vale looked at his former son-in-law with an expression of profound pity mixed with disgust.
"Adrian," my father said softly. "Who do you think authorized that forty-million-dollar funding agreement?"
Adrian froze.
"I approved it three months ago because Claire begged me to help your failing company," Arthur said, taking a step closer to him. "She came to my office in secret, sat across from my desk, and spent three hours convincing me that her husband was a brilliant businessman who just needed a chance. She traded her private dividend shares to guarantee your loan."
The words hit Adrian like a physical blow. He staggered back a step, looking at me with wide, horrified eyes.
"Claire..." Adrian stammered, his face pale, his voice trembling violently. "You... you got us the Vale backing?"
"I loved you, Adrian," I said, looking at him through the cold rain. "I wanted you to succeed. I wanted you to feel proud of yourself. But you were so obsessed with status, so terrified of being seen with someone you thought was 'beneath' you, that you destroyed the only real thing you ever had."
"Claire, baby, please!" Adrian pleaded, rushing toward me, his hands outstretched. "I didn't know! I was confused! Vanessa—Vanessa tricked me! She seduced me, she told me you were dragging me down!"
Behind him, Vanessa’s face twisted in rage. "You lying bastard! You asked me to move in three weeks ago! You told me she was a worthless parasite!"
"Shut up, Vanessa!" Eleanor screamed, rounding on the younger woman. "Take off my daughter-in-law's robe right now! Get off our porch!"
"Your porch?!" Vanessa shrieked back. "Didn't you hear the lawyer? You're homeless! You're both broke!"
As the three of them began shouting over one another in the pouring rain, two more vehicles pulled up the shattered driveway—these ones marked with the insignia of the City Sheriff's Department.
Four uniformed deputies stepped out, led by Sheriff Miller, a man my father had known for twenty years.
"Mr. Vale," Sheriff Miller said, tipping his hat. "We received the emergency eviction order from Judge Montgomery. Do you require assistance clearing the property?"
"The ten minutes aren't up yet, Sheriff," Arthur replied calmly. "Give them seven more minutes."
Adrian fell to his knees in the wet gravel right in front of my bare feet, completely ignoring the mud soaking through his expensive designer trousers.
"Claire, please," he sobbed, reaching for the hem of my father's coat that wrapped around me. "Think of our baby! She's a Hawthorne! She needs her father! We can fix this! I'll kick Vanessa out right now! I'll fire her! I'll make my mother apologize on her knees!"
Eleanor looked like she was about to faint, clutching the stone pillar of the porch as the reality of her total destruction settled in. "Adrian, don't beg her..."
"Shut up, Mom!" Adrian screamed over his shoulder, tears mixing with the rain on his face. He turned back to me, grasping at my wet hands. "Claire... please. Look at me. I love you."
I looked down at the man I had spent three years trying to please. I looked at his expensive watch, his ruined hair, and his pitiful, desperate eyes.

"You didn't love me, Adrian," I said, pulling my hand gently out of his grip. "You loved the idea of power. And now you have neither."
I turned my back on him and walked toward my father's Escalade.
